Has anyone rebuilt their own? I'm wanting to tackle this, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. Mine is leaky and has a little slop. The slop probably comes from the steering shaft insulator.

im going to check out a 57. I would take a look at a shop manual for that.

Don't want to have to rip it out again later.

Yes, I have done a couple of full teardown and renovations - no big deal, you must read the fsm and follow the steps there. The worst part is that you don't have the special tools. It's doable even without the special tools, but I have made my own Tools for the steering gear.

Clean up the steering gear good before cracking it open - work on a clean bench.

You can make a steering gear "stand" out of a thick steel plate - just drill 2 holes and bolt it on the gear and mount the "stand" in a good bench vice - this will help you VERY much.

The big lids/nuts can be unscrewed with some square steel pieces.

RockAuto has both the complete overhaul kit with needle bearings and a "gasket kit"

Thank you so much. I'm going to mull this over before I decide to tear into this.
