I have a custom grind cam that came with a 392 hemi I purchased. Just looking for some opinions on it. I will be putting this engine into a 57 imperial and this is the only cam I have on hand. I am curious as to how far from stock it is and how it will behave in the imperial.

Thanks for any input.

That's a bigger duration than what I am used to seeing, especially on the exhaust. It would probably require a higher than stock stall converter. But you may be able to mitigate some of that with high compression, like 11:1 or so. That probably isn't the cam you would want for a big Imperial. But to get a better understanding of it, it would be best to give Crower a call.

yeah, that's not a super hot cam but definitely hotter than a stock Imperial cam. It's actually close to a stock 426 Street Hemi grind.

I remember it used to be 5 different grinds on PAW catalog, I went for the number 2 for the torque converter and auto trans, as recommended by the seller do to the idle speed.

This cam has some overlap. Idle sound will be little bit rough, not quiet and smooth like Imperial style. But this cam will give lot more mid range torque than original cam. Will be fun to drive over 50 mph.
I had almost similar cam in my Desotos 383 engine.

If you are sticking with the stock Imperial exhaust system, gears, carb, air cleaner, intake, etc. it might run worse than the stock cam even at high RPM's.

For a 'mostly stock' Imperial I would NOT use that cam...too much duration and the 108° lsa will be too lumpy.

I don't have the stock specs handy but the Imperial might be happier with something closer to 0.440 lift - 222° duration and 112° lsa

108° is not the lsa, its the installed centerline. lsa is 112°, which sounds good.

I would be willing to trade you for a stock 392 cam and the lifters to go with it (they establish a wear pattern together), if you are interested.

I agree, a 112° LSA is pretty mild.

yes, but depends on duration. 112° lsa cams can be big. the above cam isn't but i still wouldn't run it in an imperial. too much duration imo.

My '57 NY had the old PAW range 3 cam which is real close to the OP's cam and the idle wasn't all that rough but it did have a noticeable lope. All depends on the individual's tolerance for lope.

Another thing to consider is that with a hot can the engine will have lower vacuum. May not have enough vacuum to keep the metering rods in the carb in the correct position causing a very rich air fuel mixture at low speeds. Also may affect your power brakes.
