Here is the current list:

1. Oil bath air cleaner. This is for a 4 bbl Carter WCFB carb - 4 1/8" (or so) top. The air cleaner needs to have the indent on it to clear the PS pump which is attached to the back of the generator. (See attached photo showing the red air cleaner that my car is missing).

2. Steering wheel. Two-tone. The "white" plastic on mine has cracked and pieces have fallen off. Hoping for something that is better than that that I could fix and paint. I know about the restoration guys but I am choking on $1300 plus to get that done.

3. Front a rear badge medallions (the three (4?) color plastic ones that live inside the chrome bezels). Apparently unique to the 1956.

4. Interior Dome light - chrome base with switch.

5. Push button 12 V neg ground radio, i.e. Motorola Mopar 842HR tube type or Motorola Mopar 941 HR transitor.

6. The rear V-8 wide "V" trunk badge. Mine has been polished to death.

Hope you can help.

Regretfully, I don't have the parts that you are looking for, but here is some information for you.

Steering Wheel: Almost all of the delux steering wheels (two-tone) will chip away at this point in their lives. I have one and it falls apart in my hands. My cheap solution was to find the basic 55-56 Dodge wheel. They are much easier to repair and arn't as brittle. I found one on ebay for around $30, used some Por-15 epoxy, and was able to fix it up pretty good. The basic wheels are more rubbery, whereas the delux wheel is a brittle plastic.

The front and rear crests are a '56 only design. They only places I know where you can get reproductions is through George Laurie or Emblem Magic. George's service is spotty at best, so you may want to start at Emblem Magic.

I assume that since you are only looking for a single dome light, your car is a post car as opposed to a hard-top. The Plymouth and Dodge hardtops has 2 dome lights, one on each side near the doors, whereas the post cars have a single dome in the center. You can get NOS on ebay occasionally. I have a few used bases. You can also get the new lenses on ebay.

I have a few 842's but they all need restoration.

Hope this gets you in the right direction.

Dave

Thanks for the reply Dave (I think you are Dave. I am a Dave as well).

I want to be able to use the "Full Time Power Steering" (when "Part Time" power steering just won't do) horn bar. Will that fit on the lesser 55/56 Dodge/Plymouth wheel?

I was balking at Emblem Magic's prices. I didn't know about George Laurie and it seems that he does good work for better prices. Just spotty on the delivery part. Not sure about that one.

My car is a 4 dr post. I was looking for a 56 Plymouth 2dr hardtop V8 automatic for months and the closest I got was a 4dr in Ottawa ON. During this search I stumbled on to this 56 Dodge Custom Royal 4 dr Sedan. I would have passed on it but it had the D-500 engine and brake package and I couldn't let it get away from me. So yes, the single rectangular dome light in the middle of the headliner. Looks to be the same as the one in my 55 Dodge (Canadian Regent) I drove in High School and University (67-72).

I went to see a guy yesterday to look at his 55 Royal Lancer 270 hemi 2dr hardtop - to chat with him - not to buy his car (I would have if I hadn't found the 56 D-500). He sold me a Mopar 910 HR Town and Country that is supposedly working (he bought as "working" not realizing that it wasn't 6V Pos ground but 12V neg ground). Assuming it is working, I will need period correct knobs for it since the ones it came with are plastic (but Mopar plastic);)

This is the add for his (Ken S's) 55 Royal Lancer: https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/pml/cto/5823812680.html

Dave, (I am a Dave too)

I got new crests from George Laurie for my '56 and had no issues, but other have had ALOT of issues with him. I actually think he may be the one who makes the crests for Emblem Magic. Finding good used crests is extremely difficult and they go for as much as the reproduction crests from George.

Since you have a post car, then you can use the dome and base from similar "post" 55/56 Plymouths and Dodges. Reproduction lenses are on ebay for $40. I have a couple of bases (one NOS that I will be using) but I can see if either of the other ones can be cleaned up if you are interested. My parts are scattered between multiple locations right now so it may take me a few days to find them.

With the steering wheel, you can use either 55 or 56 Dodge wheels (not plymouth). Dodge had two wheels on their cars, a basic rubber type wheel that was a single painted color (available in several colors) and then they offered the Delux wheel which was the two-tone hard plastic wheel. The plastic wheels just don't survive the heat. I have the one off of my Custom Royal hanging in the garage right now to be recast at some point but I am in no rush to spend $1300 either. So yes, get a cheap rubber wheel and repair it yourself. There are lots of videos on youtube to show you how. A dremel tool and some epoxy will get you where you need to be. Your "Power steering" wheel center will fit on either one without issue. I had originally painted mine in white and black and didn't like it (too white) so I just painted it all black for now. I will see if I can find a picture.

That's a very nice '55 CRL! And a great score with the radio!

Dave:

Medallions: I've emailed George Laurie and I must have hit him at a good time because he replied already and I have ordered the medallions and a few other lenses.

Dome light: If you had a center dome light base, it is likely to be better than mine. Silver coins?

Steering wheel: I will look for a single material 55-56 Dodge steering wheel. I am not against fixing and painting one as needs be.

Radio: I need to find OE knobs and figure out why the five pre-set buttons don't work. I've figured out how to set the pre-sets but the buttons do nothing. Nada. Zilch. Hmm...

I've found a local guy who converts vintage radios into AM/FM/MP3 using the front bits and ignoring the original back bits including all the tubes. I am not a purist in that regard. 180 Watts 2 or 4 channel.

Excellent. Keep on George, the ordering is the easy part!!! I will see what I have for the dome light bases, in know one is in really bad shape but the other two might be usable. I will also look around to see if I have another set of radio knobs. There is also a gentleman on this site that does the radio conversions. Hemidenis is his name if you want to do some searching.

Look, if one of you "hoarding weasels" don't cough up nice red D-500 aircleaner like this one:

I will be forced to install one of these after market cast aluminum air cleaners:

Please don't make me do it.

(And I was just kidding about the "hoarding weasels".

Probably more like "hoarding foxes".

Apparently on the air cleaner issue a 55-56 Chrysler single 4 bbl air cleaner will work. I would just need to be repainted from black to the D-500 red.

So...If you know of a 55-56 Chrysler air cleaner let me know (Please).

A couple of updates:

1. I am getting a "solid" black steering wheel out of a 56 Dodge in French Lake Auto Parts (FLAP) yard in MN.

2. I bought a used 2 tone steering wheel locally. It is about the same as the one you posted (repeated below):

3. In going through some of those steering wheel repair videos on Youtube I found one where the wheel was a Mk 1 VW Beetle. The guy painted the final product with Rustoleum Almond and it looked very much like the original OE VW plastic. I will go that route as I rehab either the solid black wheel (yet to come) or the two tone wheel.

Nice! You will be better served rehabbing the black rubber wheel rather than the two-tone plastic. I think the plastic will deteriorate much quicker.

I just got a "50's" Chrysler air cleaner from Martin in Arizona that I hoped might work for the D-500. Unfortunately, the factory indent in drivers side wasn't big enough to avoid the PS pump at the back of the generator so I either I beat it with a ballpeen hammer or I am still in the market for a proper 56 D-500 air cleaner.

In the interim I am running this (it could use a tiny cut out on the edge of the lower pan, at the moment it is touching the PS fill tube).

Question for any 56 D500 owners out there: What is the diameter of the proper 56 D-500 air cleaner? The Chrysler one that I might have to beat with a ballpeen hammer is 16". The temporary chrome one is 14". Maybe the issue is not the diameter but the height, i.e. I need a 4 7/32" diameter spacer under the air cleaner?

I was able to get around the clearance issue by "clocking" the PS pump at the back of the generator to get the clearance when I did the conversion to paper filter(s):

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=64043&...

All that said, after two years of looking, I finally found a real 56 D500 oil bath air cleaner on ebay last week and managed to nab it today without a bidding war. (I mean, who else would care?) It's the OE oil bath and I will keep it as such while running one of my other three air cleaners, including the one that I converted to paper filter and painted to look like an OE D500 air cleaner. I will likely restore this "new" oil bath, with a cleaning and a repaint and new factory stickers (which I think I already bought 2 years ago at my first swap meet).

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/55-1956-DODGE-CHRYSLER-315-HEMI-OIL-BATH-AIR...

Am I obsessed? (Don't bother answering - we all know the answer).

Hope you can help.

The list above was made two years ago just after I purchased my car. Since then, I have found *ALL* of the above one way or the other (NOS, used, converted, etc). Thanks for asking.
