I recently acquired a 56 Custom Royal with the D-500 315 Hemi engine and 12" brake package but, as far as I can tell, not the suspension package. I would like to get that confirmed based on the cowl tag. The VIN is 42616006 so I think it was built in LA and therefore less likely to have the full D-500 package.

This is my first post on ForwardLook.net so I am not sure if I will be able to post a photo of the cowl tag. If I can't these are the codes:

SG = 1
M1 = 8
M5 = 2
M8 = 3
M9 = 4
Sched = 0515 (May 15, 1956?)
NO = 5215
Model = D633 (which I know is Custom Royal V8)
BT = 835
PT = 261 (I have an original Ditzler color chart and my combo of Sapphire white, Royal Blue poly and Wedgewood Blue is 561-2)
TR = 541

The engine is definitely a D-500. The number stamped on the engine behind the water pump manifold is D500-4603

Thanks in advance.

I am surprised that nobody has helped me with this after almost a month and 98 views.

It's extremely difficult to decipher '56 Dodges. There is no "key" in existence and it is a project that I have been meaning to work on but haven't had the time. The member here who had some information and who I had worked with on some of the numbers passed away last year (RIP D500Neil). I can tell you that you are correct in all of the assumptions that you made (Body, Paint, and Build date). Have you ordered your cars history from Chrysler historical yet? If you can get that information, we can compare and contrast our cars to figure some of this stuff out.

Hmm...I guess I expected that somebody had put together a data base by now. I have done over 100 four page build tag documents for owners of various 90-97 turbo 20 valve (inline 5 hemi) Audis around the world - but this is because somebody somewhere put together an extensive data base that I could work from.

I tried to order the info about my car from Chrysler Historical the day after I bought my 56 CR D500 back on Sept. 15th, but I ran into the statement that they are shut down until January 2017. With the announced closing of WPC museum, I am not hopeful that Chrysler historical will even be back in January.

Hence my renewed "plea" for help. What I am curious about is the fact that I have a D500 engine and the big 12" Chrysler brakes but not the suspension. Being it's a Custom Royal 4 dr sedan, it has been suggested that it was a D500 Special (just the engine) but that the original purchaser also ticked the brake option box (but not the suspension). Since I understand that full package D500s (engine, brakes and suspension) were built in Detroit, and my 42616006 was built in LA, that suggestion seems to be reasonable. BUT I would like to get that officially confirmed (somehow).

Dave F.

PS: Sorry about D500Neil's passing. I obviously would have liked to have known him and quizzed him about my car. Was there no hardcopy info that he left to a forum member to carry on the D500 cause?

No hardcopy of anything was left as far as I am aware so I am going to start the process all over again with the help of others. I've stated collecting the data but I haven't had the opportunity to start putting the key together. I did see that the museum was closing but didn't see anything about Chrysler Historical.

I was going to add that your car was built in LA in my last post but forgot. I can tell because of the differences in the data plates between your car and mine which is another aspect that makes all of this so hard to figure out.

I think I read somewhere that the Road to Roof D-500's (Motor, suspension, brakes) were all made in January of '56 and the option was only available on certain models. After that time, it became a motor option that was available in any car. I need to look at my files to confirm. I will see if I can dig anything else up for you and report back.

Like this?:

"The D-500 was released on December 22, 1955, first as a 2 door hardtop and convertible Royal Lancer, then in the Coronet line as a 2 door sedan club coupe, and as a convertible. The Coronet convertible was available, but it was not listed. It's possible that it was used for racing only.

The two versions of the Coronet (the 2 door sedan club coupe and the convertible) were available in full race form. They were also available with optional equipment but this model was the D-500-1, held back until January 12, 1956 to reduce confusion of the two D-500s. So on January 12, 1956 the D-500-1 became official.

On March 9, 1956 there was an announcement that boded ill for the D-500: the D-500 Special using standard Dodge suspension springs and 11-inch brakes. That was part of a letter that was released on March 9, 1956, reading, “We recently extended the availability of this equipment to include all V8 models and body types.” It confused the identity of the freshly minted D-500. "

My 56 CR sedan has the engine and brakes so it is somewhere between full on D-500 and the D-500 Special.

:bleh:

Maybe that is the last time I believe Allpar. I was looking for something else D500-related today and found and re-read the April 2002 Mopar Muscle article about Tim Dupont's D500-1 (or D63-D-550-1 to be more correct) and on the last page of the article I found a statement that I should have seen before:

"Mar. 9, 1956:...Light Duty D-500 without the suspension changes or D-500-1 optional equipment. D500 hemi, dual exhaust and 12-inch CenterPlane brakes left as standard equipment".

Ah ha!! That is why I can't find a special brake code for my car. The 12" brakes were *standard equipment* with the D500 engine even if you didn't get the 6 leaf springs, etc. - makes sense.

Live and learn.

Here is a cowl tag from another D500 Custom Royal 4 dr Sedan along with mine. Same body (835), same paint combo (261) and same trim (541). Seems to also have PS and PB like mine. Not sure about the brakes and/or suspension. The only difference that I know is the 2nd one has Air Con.

Twins Separated at Birth??:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69953&...

So I need to try to correlate the codes and figure out what is what. If I can.

Mine: SG=1, M1 = 8, no M3, M5 = 2, M8 = 3 and M9 = 4

The "new" one: SG =1 (same) , M1 = 7 (different), M3 = 7 (different), no M5, M8 = 3 (same) and M9 = 3 (different)

I think the second (new) one is also LA built based on the type and location of the build tag and the location of the tape that held the broadcast sheet at the car went down the assembly line.

UPDATE: Called the seller in South Carolina. It is the Springfield Mass car. Its VIN starts with "42" so it *IS* an LA built-car as I suspected. So very nearly a twin to mine from the same line.

Anybody who knows this stuff, please chime in.
