Expert Posts: 2524 Location: Houston | As some of you might recall, I bought this Desoto about 2-1/2 years ago out of Indianapolis. I’ve had some shifting desires regarding car projects and am offering this one up for sale. Yes…I know it’s bad to disassemble a car then stop working on it….! The price I am asking is about half of what I have in it so I guess that’s what I get for it. Currently the car is ‘component’ disassembled. That means I removed the doors but did not take the doors apart. I removed the dash but did not take it apart. I removed the front fenders but did not take them apart, etc. I have not touched the rear end or front end suspension, brakes, etc. I have a more complete description for anyone who is interested, you can PM me your email address and I will send it along with photos. The good: ’57 Fireflite 2 dr HT…nice Capri Blue/White factory colors, seek radio, the usual power options. Almost all trim is present and in very nice shape for refinishing. The roof trim in particular is very, very nice. I have almost all of the emblems in good shape. Original 341 Hemi in pieces but complete. Carb appears to be from an Imperial. Radiator looks fixable, exhaust manifolds are good. Good glass all around, good gaskets. All sheetmetal needed to restore this car is present, you would not need to locate fenders or doors or quarters, etc. Does need a new gas tank. Trunk lid and hood are solid. The bad: Rusted floors front and rear and trunk and rockers. The lower quarter panels are rusted through but not badly. The frame is tweaked on the front passenger side. I have a nice frame from a 58 Chrysler that comes with the deal or you could pull the original frame back into shape. Will need complete re-do of seats....had to get rid of OEM foam/fabric as it was degraded and soaked with rodent pee. Parts: I bought original non-rusty floorpans and trunk from Big M. Also new rockers are included. New repro aluminum sillplates from Sweden. I ordered $900 in lenses from George Laurie… if he ever produces them, they’re yours. New hood hinge springs. Various extra pieces from a couple other FL cars I bought for parts. Car is in Houston TX. Might be able to deliver it to a shipper or your house if not too far away. Extreme Veteran Posts: 537 Location: Upstate NY | In my opinion you are asking a very reasonable price for this car. I wish I had been aware of such an opportunity for a restoration project. I'm sure you will get your price unfortunately I am tied up in projects that I will never see a profit but love the cars so that is my vice. I hope someone realizes what an opportunity it is to buy a piece of history that is not renewing. When they are gone that's it and they are getting more scarce. When I bought my cars they were in every junkyard. Now there are no junkyards or not many. People like Big M and Gary Goers are all that is keeping the old die hards going.

Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | I can attest to gregs honesty on cars condition , he looked at my 58 Desoto before I bought it and actually knew much better than me exactly what was what at the time. And he was totally spot on ! If his car is a fireflite and $6k I would have no hesitation in just handing over the money rather than worry about to many details (to save missing out on it) , as buying from honest and genuine guy who wont do the wrong thing by you is worth a great deal of his asking price , let alone the value on those roof mouldings . So I think he is being more than fair ! Good luck with it Greg .

Location: Parts Unknown | For all the whining I read on this forum about how there are no Fireflite coupes left to buy, here is one that is reasonably priced, complete, and relatively easy to restore, and it's still just waiting for someone to pop for it ! Methinks some people just like to bellyache !

Expert Posts: 2524 Location: Houston | LOL. I appreciate all the comments. While I know this car has 'issues', it is a very restorable example of a classic design. I know it's been taken apart, and that's not good, but on the other hand it's been taken apart such that all the problems are evident and a buyer won't have to worry about what surprises lurk. Plus I've made a start on the hard-to-find pieces so that adds value. Oh well...we'll see what comes of it. If it doesn't sell, I'll blow the dust off it and put it back together so it's shiny and rust-free.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | this car is so pretty and ultra rare too, an unmolested, straight 2 d ht. can't believe no none wants to pay you measly 6k for it. the hardest part of any car restoration is the outer skin/body work and that is a piece of cake on that one (if you know what you're doing, of course someone will cut the along the belt line to "fix" the few rust holes down below and ruin the car).

Expert Posts: 2524 Location: Houston | Thanks for the comments. I agree....it's got all sorts of potential and is not nearly as bad as many other FL cars I've seen fixed up. I think the difference is I am being very open about the condition rather than hiding it under a bunch of moldy carpet and letting people's hopes guide them into buying it lol. Plus I've already bought the necessary fresh sheetmetal so that part of the 'fun' is over. I did get a couple offers, FWIW, from people who offered to buy it without asking a single question or making any attempt to work out details of how they would pay or take possession of the car. These were people with 4 posts ever and I assume were scammers, lol. They have yet to pick up the car- or send money. LOL

Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Mike you have to be joking , we pay $4k to ship a car to Australia , and then sometimes $2k to get it across America from the other side to Los Angeles , then have to take a 40% hit on the US dollar exchange rate , then when it gets here we have to pay 10% of the purchase price in GST and you are complaining about 3 states away ! One day they wont be there and the americans will realise they were spoiled for choice . And then you all get on your high horse about hating to see them leave the country . We appreciate what you have and love them so much we do whatever it takes to get them . I think get off your arse and buy it if you are serious !!!!

Expert Posts: 1267 Location: San Antonio TX | I've always wanted a 57 Desoto, but I don't feel comfortable taking that big a chunk out of my bank account until after my the holidays and my vacation have passed. If it's still available 3-4 months from now, I might buy it. Price isn't bad and I'm only 2 hours away. Plus it'd be a good opportunity to practice body work.

Elite Veteran Posts: 977 Location: Sydney, Australia | It cost me around $11K AU to ship my car from Canada to Australia with all other charges.. Don't we pay taxes on all the costs and not just the purchase price? Also get taxed again on the purchase price when first registering it. So first get taxed by Federal Govt when it enters the country and then another tax charge on the sale price by State Govt. Thought this Fireflite would have gone overseas by now. Elite Veteran Posts: 1141 Location: Blackpool, United Kingdom. | Greg , do you think that with the car being partly stripped is putting people of buying, with the bhassle of having to ship car, when I bought the Regal the engine had been removed and I had a job in finding someone willing to ship engine with the car, in end I had to get a freight company to take engine on a pallet separately? Maybe worth assembling car back together loosely, at sticking on eBay in new year? There would be a lot more interest on there if you can put up with the idiots!

Expert Posts: 2524 Location: Houston | I might try Ebay at some point. I haven't thought much about the state of disassembly/assembly....here on the FL site is the only place I've advertised it and I've assumed anyone buying it would understand I'm not going to expect them to have a pile of parts hauled off. I'd get it 'packaged' up as required. etc. With a car like this....you never know where someone who buys it will come from so it could be as easy as loading it 'as is' on a trailer or, as you noted, kinda putting it back together for transport. I'm flexible.

Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Greg after I sold my Desoto , I put parts here for sale and on the facebook page , but in the end ebay was where I sold most items , as people can remain anonymous and buy when they feel like it . I think an add on ebay would be worth the effort , as people overseas sometime feel safe buying on ebay , using paypal etc... and its binding . It cant hurt for a few dollars and some time to list it . Sad to say , most of the americans love perusing the cars and telling you they would if they could etc.. , but overseas buyers are at your mercy and will obey what you require and pay up as they will appreciate the car more to outlay such money . Just my 2 cents worth .
