The old girl has obversely been repaired and paint touched up over the years and I was wanting to bring it back to it's original shade of white.

I obtained the colour code from the I.D. plate and traced it down to being Alaska White.

Had a small sample made up and when applied to a surface, ( not the car ) it was a yellow white. Stuffed up somewhere there.

Mine is a white ' 61 Newport sedan and I see a number of white hardtops on this site.

Was there only one shade of white being used by Chrysler at the time or was there more?

What is the colour code most are using?

The Ditzler code for Chrysler's 1961 Alaskan White is 8218. The same white was used on all 1960-61 models of Plymouth, Valiant, Lancer, Dart, Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler, and Imperial built in the U.S. and Canada.

It was called Alaskan White by Chrysler and Imperial in both years, but DeSoto called it Shell White in 1960 and Glacier White in 1961, all Dodge models sold it as Satin White in 1960 and Snow White in 1961, all Plymouth models had it as Oyster White in 1960 and Alpine White in 1961. All Canadian-built models sold it as Nassau White in 1960 and Glacier White in 1961. No matter the name, they were all the same colour, Ditzler code 8218, Acme code 22-8920, DuPont (U.S.A.) code 93-83807, CIL code 2331-2208.

Mopar's code for the colour was C-9144-ES.

Not sure what you used to have a sample made up. If the paint was created by mixing tints together to get the colour, sounds like they put in too much yellow.

Alex,

The Alaskan white is a little 'off white' as opposed to a 'refrigerator white'. It is a little on the cream color side of white but definitely not yellowish. I too had a sample mixed up using factory codes and it was a very good match to the original paint still in the door jams, etc. I could post a picture of the car but the light, camera, software, monitor, etc. can make things look different. Regards,

Arland

All whites are not all white. And it is best to search by the paint companies' code for the colour you want, and not the name. The search in a previous reply found four entries for "Alaskan White" on the Paint Reference site. Doing a search on the name lists the name, source, all the paint company codes, and a small sample of the colours.

The Chrysler Ditzler 8218 sample entry is white, but Ditzler code 8123 (GM/Oldsmobile) is a little on the grey side, the 8868 (Renault) has a slight blue tint, while 8792 (Peugeot) has a little darker blue tint. At least by my monitor. So, the names may be all the same, and they all may be white, they are not all the same white.
