I'm having an intermittent problem with my 1960 Chrysler where the starter will keep cranking even when the key is off. If the car starts, it will shut off but if not, I have to disconnect the battery to get it to start. I was adjust the timing today and had the coil wire disconnected to I could crank the engine around and it would just keep going.

I've replaced the ignition switch 3 times including a brand new one. The starter relay is different than my later cars so I don't have a spare. Has anyone had a problem like this caused by the relay? I guess it could be the starter itself. The relay doesn't seem to be readily available although I found one on ebay.

Thanks, Nick

It must be the starter relay that has sticky contacts Nick. They pop up at Epain now and then. Otherwise, open the relay carefully and Clean up the contacts with fine emerald cloth.

Nick, look for 1956 to 1960 relays. I had trouble finding a spare for my 60 Imp until I worked out 56 used the same as 60. The one I got was listed as 56 Desoto and is zackery the same.

Is yours like this?

Yes, that's the one I saw on ebay. I guess I should just bite the bullet and buy it.
