Wow, great car to make an introduction! Welcome here, this is a great site.

Car to share more pics and info about your beauty?

I own a pretty similar vehicle:

Hi all.. I am an all brand car guy. I have a 1970 GTO, 1969 Hurst Olds ( hence mrho455) 1963 corvette roadster, and a couple old boats.

Years ago I owned a 58 Plymouth wagon. as well as many other cars

My son has a 1975 Dart Sport with a new style Hemi crate motor

Went to a car swap meet last weekend and this Belvedere was for sale. Last registered in 1996. Owner pulled out of barn, did the brakes, cleaned the gas tank, installed new tires and drove to the swap meet.

I had to have it.

Not sure of my plans but do not even plan to wash it

will post some pics when I get it home

I have it stored at my work

thanks for the nice welcome

Awesome, Joel! Welcome aboard. We need a bunch more images of that car - neat story too!

I am re-reading Stephen King's novel right now.... perfect timing!

Welcome to the FL board, Joel!

Interesting coincidence, my wife has a '69 Hurst Olds that has been in her family since a year old, and I have a number of '58 Plymouths, and a few old boats.

20 years ago I was an avid water skier. I grew up water skiing behind a # of Glastrons. My uncles had to have the fastest boats on the river and the "Tower of Power" Mercs were their drug of choice. My 1st and only boat was a purple Glastron Carlson 16ft with 85hp Johnson that ran @43-45 tilted and trimmed. What made that boat was the closed bow front mounted gas tan. It came out iof the hole and sat down. Perfect for skiing. Nice 2dr ht with those bumper wings. I'm not a fan of R and W. but I wouldn't kick that dog.

Her are my impressions: Motor runs good, trans shifts fine. Sometimes have to push "N" twice for it to shift from drive to neutral.

Brakes work but pedal pulsates and car pulls to the right

some play in steering. After examining front end and front brakes:

Brakes have new wheel cylinders and shoes look good, no excessive wear on any front end components, looks like play in steering box (PS)

Am now trying to decide next step if I decide to keep the car.

Would like recommendations on the following:

Relatively bolt on(easy) disc brake conversion.

What is the easiest (least modifications) for master cylinder replacement if necessary . Car has factory power brakes.

Have to create a budget and get wife's approval.

I love the patina of the car so cosmetics are last on list. (I am hesitant to even wash it)

Probably have seats and carpet done first so wife will sit in it at least.

all light except dash lights work

speedo inop

gas gauge inop

any and all input appreciated

I don't know if you have sentimental attachment to the dust on your Plymouth but I bet it would look better if you pressure washed it.

Master Cylinder: The MC is independent of the power (assist) brake system. I replaced mine on my 56 Dodge Custom Royal with a Raybestos MC36063 (about US$69) Should be the same for you.

http://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearch/?mfr=RAYBESTOS&parttype=1836&...

One hose on the bottom, one pressure brake light switch connection (move to new MC) and four nuts. Easy Peasy. You have to "bench bleed" the new MC before you install it.

Disc Brakes:

I have been in contact with Roger at AAJ brakes. He will have a bracket/kit for a disc brake conversion for you:

True. And absolute necessity when going to front discs (plus a proportioning valve)

Several threads about converting from single to dual master cylinders:

that would be an interesting car... people would be like the inside must be trashed and then its beautiful...

AAJ or SSBC if you want to keep the 14" wheels, AAJ is kinda roll your own, SSBC is a turnkey. If you can go 15's that opens up Scarebird conversions which have more braking power and also the magnum force wilwood upgrade($$) which have the most power if you do the 12.19" rotor. That said, make sure the factory front brakes are adjusted correctly, they are not self adjusting and a lot of people get them wrong. There is a cam for each brake shoe (2 per wheel up front) that sets were the shoes rest. Check those, if they are set incorrectly the car will pull. The design is a bit wonky, but when they are set right they work pretty decently.

pull the cluster and clean all of the grounds/connections for the lights and see if they fire. Speedo, check that the cable isn't gummed up or Loose at the cluster or trans.

Gas gauge, check the leads with an ohm meter, 10-200ohms is the range, if your not getting anything, pull the sender/pickup out of the tank and clean it up, thats likely your issue since it was sitting.

If your car has Power steering, the play in your steering is most probably caused by a worn shaft insulator bushing. It is a small 10$ rubber piece that inserts at the junction between the steering column shaft and the gearbox and that gets worn fast. They almost always need to be changed in these cars.

I changed mine last september in about two hours:

Thanks for all the input!!!!

I will definitely check that rubber steering coupler.

Ordered carpet from "Stock Interiors"

My interior guy will start on seats after the first of the year.

I am going to research AAJ and SSB for a disc brake conversion ( definitely want to keep the stock wheels )

What would be the correct wide white wall width for the "Christine Look" ?

thanks again and Merry Christmas!

Changing the coupler fixed the steering play 100% in my case. By the way, you can get the correct rubber insulator with Gary Goers, or Andy Bernbaum. I just ordered one from Bernbaum two weeks ago as a spare to put in my stock, and it arrived already safe and sound.

As for the WWW tires, the white band should be 2 1/4" wide. I prefer the bias ply look over the radial, especially for a Christine style car, but to each their own, as long as the white strip is the correct width.

I was at the point where the next steps were going to be big $$. I was also getting numerous inquiries about if I would want to sell. I decided to try and find out where the market is. I did and I sold it. I have a lead or two on finished cars that in the long run will be cheaper and easier.

Probably gonna kick myself, but..........

Definitely cheaper buying a finished car if you can find one done to your standards,or if it might just need minor Items .Good luck with your future rides .

How close to "Christine" does the car have to be for you to be interested in a purchase?
