Elite Veteran Posts: 977 Location: Sydney, Australia | What are some causes that can make a speedo needle come back down very very slowly sometimes only returning back once parked? Also the needle can go up and off of the speedo face until the other end of the needle is showing on the face? Is that a tight cable that needs lube? Dead or dying cable? Problem at gearbox end? Problem at speedo end? Your guess is as good as mine?

Dead or dying cable? if i buy an old car and drive it i make sure first its probably serviced. so maybe it would be a good idea to lube the cable? chances are it didn't see service in 50 years. it takes about 20 minutes to lube it! and yes, i drive around with a 330++ k miles car with most of its OE components still in place and working perfectly. keep these cars alive and don't drive them into the ground. good quality (old time) parts are getting hard to find

Expert Posts: 3768 Location: NorCal | There is no direct mechanical connection between the cable and the needle, the cable drives a magnet inside a drum that the needle is attached to, the needle then moves against a calibrated return spring. Sounds like the spring has broken; this explains the slow return at a stop and the needle moving too far.

I was suckered and it's my own fault I didn't fly over or get it checked out before I put it on a boat.. I'm really paying the price of believing the owners Lucky my wife loves because if not, I'd probably be walking funny because of this shoved somewhere!! Edited by matte 2016-08-23 5:28 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 977 Location: Sydney, Australia | Thanks for help. I forgot to mention that when it has spun off there is a sound that sounds like a hamster on a hamster wheel. If it is the spring, can this be replaced?

Expert Posts: 3887 Location: Northen Virginia | I remember that happened to the cable of my 61 New Yorker, I puller out oil it and put it back. The problem was not solved and the noise was getting even worst. Finally the cable snapped and I replace it with a NOS piece that was harder to find that I expected.

Yes but it might be hard to find one with the correct tension....job for a speedo repair shop. It might be cheaper and easier to buy the new speedo and sensor setup. If I went that way hopefully I could mount it near the other gauges under the dash or maybe there is a small size I could fit in the clock blackout. Haven't seen any that small though..
