Anybody tell me how a non power-steering column comes off the gearbox? I removed the pinchbolt and slid its collar up out of the way. The pinch bolt and collar were on a tube with a 2in split that meets up to the gearbox and I can only move the tube back a 1/4in or so. Didnt wanna mess anything up so I figure Id defer to the masters. Thanx for any help.

You havnt said what car??????????

Anyway, on my 60 dodge with manual steering, you cant remove the column/shaft without stripping the actual box

Undo the pitman arm off the box (only fits on in one spot, it has a "blind spline") Take the mounting bolts out and note how the washers and the wedge are set up (photos are good) and it should come down and out.

Not sure if you need to remove the column jacket to get it out on yours, but I would take it off anyway and also make sure you have the car jacked up enough in the front to allow it all to drop out.

If the column is released from the dash it should just pull straight up now.

I assume you have removed the steering wheel and horn wire.
