The service manual says my 413 needs to be set at 10°BTDC. I had it set to specs until I read an old article by Tom McCahill. He recommended using a vacuum gauge to set timing. Turn the distributor until the highest vacuum reading is reached, then back off an inch or two of vacuum. It runs amazingly well with no pinging, but I checked with a timing light and I have around 17° initial. Does anyone else recommend this method? It runs very strong.

Check that the TDC corresponds with the mark on the harmonic balancer. 17 degrees sounds far off.

Just make sure the highest vacuum happens at the same RPM.
Anytime you increase timing, rpm rises. Turn back/adjust the idle-speed screw everytime you change the distributor.

The engine might sound/rev pretty strong, but it may ping like crazy when you put a load on it like accelerating in 3rd gear for instance.

This is where vacuum advance can help out.
Leave initial timing at 10-12 degrees, and use the vacuum advance on manifold vacuum to increase the ignition vacuum advance at idle to a high number what the engine still likes.
