Location: San Antonio, TX		After reading some tips that you can in fact replace the windlace without replacing the headliner. I decided to try it. My windlace on the 57 DeSoto sedan was shot. The headliner was still in very good shape. So I got it into my head that I should try and keep the original headliner... at least for now.

I was able to undo the headliner from under the gripper strip. It's a very, very tedious job and you can't let yourself get in a hurry. I worked all the way around, pushing the headliner up and off each tooth of the gripper strip. Used a dental tool to work it off. Dental tool worked well to pull out the windlace clips too.

So in the long run was this easier than replacing the headliner? Jury is still out on that one. I've replaced headliners... and in my book that's definitely not one of the funner jobs.

Location: San Antonio, TX		Ok, yes you can replace the windlace without replacing the headliner. My headliner is not perfect but just OK. Yeah, I'll probably end up replacing it anyhow. So was it worth the trouble? Probably not, but I just wanted to see if Icould.

I got it from eBay. Dealer is classicautotrimnv. Not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for. Top quality.

Location: Lower Mainland BC		Any other hints on Windlace replacement without removing/replacing the headliner? I am "refinishing" my headliner (photos to come) because I do NOT want to open that can of worms and get lost for weeks/months. However, my windlace (56 Dodge) really does need replacing, including the piece beside the rear seat back, so I am hoping for any addition hints that might be out there.



Like this piece. Mine disintegrated. I presume it was hardboard (masonite) under the vinyl (mine was cloth):
