Hi all,
I picked up my first Froward Look on Saturday, a local car in Tasmania, sold new in Burnie.
It's not a bad car, just a few issues to sort out. Not much rust at all and pretty straight car, some douche has self tappered allot of the trims, fark knows why you would do that, a real shame.
The 361 sounds strong and the gearbox is nice and smooth, interior seats are re-trimmed.
The car was resprayed in the mid 80's, not my ideal colour so am thinking maybe original pale green colour or similar. Good thing is my misses said to get it done soon, it'll have to stripped to the bare bones so there goes another 20k most likely. Can't believe she gave me the go ahead on that one.
Thinking wheel choice will be chromed steelies and wide whites. Can't wait to get into this beast.
Any advice on where to order parts from, a reliable source either here or the USA? I am searching for some rear brake drums, 11" are hard to find in Australia.
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.
I think I'm hooked now and will never probably own a non FL car again.

Nice car. Parts are rough so keep an eye on ebay, craigslist and here.

I would normally check here first.

That car seems to be all there so it shouldn't be too bad.

and after ripping my front end off my 57, I was surprised how easily these cars come apart. A rusty 70's car is way worse to get apart.

Maybe its just my car isn't that rusty also. I do hate these "self destructing" fender bolts

I am very pleased to see you were able to pick up a forward look era car, and even more pleased that it is a 59 Custom Royal. Great choice.
Better still permission to spend money on the body.

Great looking '59. I have 3 myself. Take care of that padded steering wheel piece. Very hard to find good ones.

Thanks Mike, she's not a bad car at all.
Will keep an eye out on here and ebay, I agree about takling these things apart, they do seem easier these 50's cars.

Thanks Steve, pretty rare to find a car like this in this small state.
It was only 2 hours away, I haven't seen another FL Mopar in Tasmania for a loooong time so I'm guessing she might attract a bit of interest.
Side trim screws do my head in every time I look at the car.

Hi matte, yes I sold the Valiant but I couldn't keep that and buy a FL so I had to bite the bullet. It's gone to Melbourne buddy.

Yeah it's a shame that the Val had to go but the replacement is awesome and will be a big head turner. That is a good score finding one in Tassie! I would love to come down and do a tour of Tassie in the Plymouth. My wife and I put our motorbikes on the Spirit of Tassie and toured around there and it was brilliant on the bikes but would love to do it in the Plymouth this time.

G'day there Stinky from a fellow Aussie 59 Dodge owner, saw pics of your 59 Dodge over on facebook, nice car.

That was BAD about a previous owner screwing down the trim on your car, what was he thinking ??

There's a few parts sources for our cars and I can definitely vouch for John at Big M Auto in California, apart from being a super nice fellow he got me a trunk floor pan for my 59 Dodge ( from a Desoto I think ? ) and got it shipped to me down here all fine along with a power steering setup as well.

A big help for you would be to buy a workshop manual but you can look one up for free online as well, VERY handy to get to know your way around the car and working how it comes apart and goes together.

Here's a link to the free online manual

http://jholst.net/59-parts-manual/index.php

Most of the other parts I have for my Dodge were Evilbay buys, I did manage to get hold of a 361 locally from an Aussie 59 Desoto along with a torqueflite from same car and a 413 and another torqueflite from QLD but most stuff has to come from the states.

Over to you........

Cheers,

Terry

Hey Terry, When my car comes back from getting ready for a blue slip, I might come for a cruise to the Hunter. Should be a good test run and I would love to see your 59!!

Some cowboy in Canada decided to use screw for my roof trim! I'm too scared to get the car wet just incase it's not sealed!

Hi Terry,
Thanks for all that info buddy, have saved the online manual to Favorites now. That will be VERY handy, I have been looking for a manual and will buy one when I see one pop up.
I have already made contact with John and he has been very helpful already, have some parts being shipped down soon. Thanks for the lead anyway, seems John is the man to deal with which is great to know.
It's a real shame whoever did that to all the trim, have sorted a couple of extra trim pieces from John and will now keep a look out on ebay, just starting to realise my budget will be passed as parts locally seem very hard to obtain. I'm just not letting the missus know to much.....hehe
thanks again Terry, appreciate it.
Pete.

.......

No Problems Pete, happy to help out, I came into the Mopar world back in early 2012 owning my 59 Dodge and knew nothing what so ever about it and Mopars ( I'm a Holden man ) and have only learn't from helpful people on here so just spreading the love so to speak.

You'll find it's fun, frustrating and expensive to get parts and have them sent down here but that's how it is, not much can be done about it and these are ultra rare cars down here in any year/model/body style anyway so it's just a part of owning one.........

There is a link thingy on here on the forum to ebay that you can use to search specifically for parts for your car and year . I use it because I'm led to believe some flipback dollars from ebay come back to help run this site via use of this link ( someone correct me if I'm wrong ).

Anything else I can help with ask here or send me a PM, no expert at all but can offer info on what I've learnt so far to help you along.

Cheers.

G'day Matt,

Be interested in how your blue slip comes along , there are a lot of inspectors that will tell you all sorts of things of what you have to do to get your car passed but I know some blokes in RTA Tech Enquiries that can sort out the inspectors BS.

I'm no where near blue slip territory for my car yet unfortunitely.........

Yep, by all means, come up for a lookey see, I'm up in the top of the Hunter Valley, probably ( depending where you live in Sydney ) about a 1.5 hour trip on the freeway, then about another hour or so along the New England Highway.....

Cheers from up in Pumpkinpickerville

Yeah mate I've read some horror stories about inspectors not knowing their stuff... I spoke to a guy who seems to know the right things but I have printed out all things from the RTA site that states all that is needed for these old import girls. She's completely standard and nothing has been changed so that makes it easier... I do want to put a lap seatbelt in the back and an anchor point for a child seat but I'll wait until it's rego'd!!! I also can see myself having trouble in the RTA with things like the short VIN number instead of 17 characters!!!!

Should be a nice drive up to your way.. The old girl should turn a few heads.. I wouldn't mind to goto that "Lost In The 50's" museum in the Newcastle area. Have you heard of this place? Sorry to hijack thread, Stinky.

Thanks Terry, very helpful info buddy. Will use that link when I find it.
Already finding out this is going to be more expensive to do than my normal Aussie Valiant build, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the long run.

Being having a play around lozrox and it's not s bad car but I'm thinking seriously about flying up to have a look at that other 59 DCR for sale in Parkes.
I have requested more pics and info, the current owner said the 383 engine is factory with a 904 which doesn't sound right. He has only owned it for 12 months as well. If I popped on this one I would have to sell the one I have now. Can't keep two unfortunately.

Just reading along and I have to agree with you, I don't believe it was possible to bolt a 904 trans. to a big block. Not without some kind of adapter.

See if he can send you the engine number. That way you will know what size the engine is and what year model. My mate Brian seems to recall it is fitted with an early 60's big block with aluminium 727 and hand brake on the 9 inch diff. A good combination and I thought it was a good buy.
A project is always good fun, but I've been working on mine for over 6 years.
It will be on the road soon! Honest!

Have requested the engine number lozrox, that should tell me more. Is there a database I can go on once I get it to decode it?
I don't have a allot of patience so a rolling resto car is better for me, cruise and fix at the same time. I don't want a show condition car, just a nice car to cruise in and this one probably fits the bill a bit better for me.
Have requested more pics and info so will wait and see.

I copied these links a while ago so I'm not too sure which ones still work.
On the three 1959 Aussie 361's that I have seen they all have the casting number 1944929-4 on the side of the block.
Engine number starts with ML361

Awesome thanks lozrox, great info mate. The owner is now stating that I should go on the Hemmings website to see that in 1959 there was an option for the 383. I'm not sure he knows if thats a US sight or not and doesn't apply to Aus, we wouldn't have had that option down here surely. That would be the D500 wouldn't it?

The 383 was available as the D500 option in the USA, and super D500 with the twin carbs. But it wasn't available here in Oz.

You can just see the engine number under the distributor in the photo, can't quite make it out, kinda looks like 383 ( or 83 ) is part of the number ??.

I have a 361 here at home from a 59 Desoto and 61 forms part of its number.

Looks like its got a 4 barrel Holley on it under the air cleaner.

Bosch alternator conversion and looks like it might ? have HQ Holden brake master and booster but can't quite see it all to tell, now I've had another look, maybe Aussie Valiant master cyl ??.

Bosch GT40 coil.

Looks to be the early 4 bolt valve cover on the engine so has the early heads.

Also looks like the entire under hood heater enclosure has been taken away?

Tough Aussies didn't need a heater Terry. Heater box was only on LHD cars. The heaters over here were an aftermarket (it sorter fits) option.

Yeah I found that out after I saw so many RHD Dodges and Ply's without the heater boxes... I've got one being a LHD car but I don't need it for the heat coming from the firewall!

The heater was standard (I believe) on the "Deluxe" models and likely an option on the standard ones

My dodge had the factory heater and it is mopar. Its the same one as used in the trucks and has truck division written on it and has the
under dash "D.A.T.H" heater control panel.

On my dodge (and I would have thought it would be pretty much the same on all of this era car) they used a cast aluminium plate to adapt the heater to the contours of the fire wall and "hacked" (its not pretty) out a bloody big hole where it sits

The original heater holes are paneled in under the cowl vent and is not removable without cutting, so no easy access to the fresh air vent for the Aussie cars and on the R/H side of the firewall there is a duplication of the bumps in the firewall for the brake pedal assembly to mount on, and that takes care of the hole where the US heater fan was

This car does not appear to have had the factory heater, but does have an aftermarket heater/AC fitted (just looking at engine bay picture)

It may have had firewall work as it looks a bit messy across the top, but it wasnt that neat from factory, I would also guess its not the deluxe model, just based on the lack of the hole for the truck heater

So here's an update with pics of the Dodge with its new shoes on, I really like them and think they suit the car nicely. I will lower it a bit more just to get the right stance I'm after. Still waiting on some parts from the US but will get there eventually.
Next job is pulling out the seats and laying Dynamat down then new floor carpet as it didn't have any when I bought it.
There is a photoshop of the Dodge with pretend airbags in it on the last photo, look hell cool but obviously not driveable like that.
Started cleaning under the bonnet at it's coming up nice, the whole car is now cut and polished with a wax over it and it's come up better than I thought which is great news, will not worry about painting it for another 2-3 years now. All chrome is now polished and am slowly getting there pulling out all those god awful screws and putiing clips back in.
Cheers folks, Peter.

Mate, it's come up a treat. I really like this one better than the one you were looking at over on the mainland. I actually like it better sitting higher than the last or maybe an inch lower in the first couple.. What type of tyres and what did they set you back?

Hi Matt, she's definitely coming up better than I thought. I'm glad I stuck with this one as its really growing on me now.
I bought the wheels and tyres from Antique Tyres in Victoria.
The fronts are 15x7 with 215/75 Coker wide whites, the rears are 15x8 with 235/75 Coker as well. All up the package was 3k delivered, a bit pricey but I love them.
Hoping I can get the car all sorted for some summer cruising.

I like! The white walls make a big difference, and having no ugly rusty screw heads in the side trim also looks good.

Man the 59 Dodge just has the best front end on it! I remember first seeing a big white 59 that used to visit my neighbours when I was growing up.. I would walk to my neighbours place and just admire this car but I would not walk in front of it. Yes the front end scared me a little because at that tender age I was my imagination would run away.. I also would not walk in front of our old tractors when parked in the big old sheds!!

We had 3 that would sit side by side in a shed with an open front. Even when I was young they were already oldish. I think I got freaked out by them because of an episode of the comedy show "The Goodies" when all construction vehicles came to life.. I would come in from the side of them so I could play on them and also freaked climbing up because the big wheels could squash me if the tractor "wanted" to.
All 3 were maroon/red colour but I only remember 2 of them and looked something like this but not with the thin steering front wheels. The one with the bucket was the scariest. Some old vehicles just looked like they had a life, especially when so young.

Thanks lozrox, I'm a bit partial to whitewalls and steelies, they are my wheel of choice.
I can't wait to get rid of all the rusty screws mate, It's definately looking better without them.

Hey Matt, they definately have a beautiful but also evil looking front on them, I can't wait to scare some young kids with it....lolz.
I'm looking for some old tractor seats like the ones in the first pic of yours, they make great mancave seats.
