64 727 Torqueflite in a 58 Belvedere. When engine reaches operating temperature I lose reverse. Can push R button in...but transmission does engage into reverse. When engine cools down reverse works again. Initially, I thought it was because the cable was not long enough...because it isn't, so I moved the pushbuttons down below the dash so cable wouldn't be "stretched." it still doesn't go into reverse when hot. A member here suggested the neutral safety switch might be screwed in too much....so I unscrewed it and re-torqued it to 20 foot lbs....(the lower end of the spec. = 20-30 ft lbs.) I still have the problem...Anybody have any other suggestions. I'm at a loss.

Thaaks...Bob

Remove the cable core from the shifter and push the cable core all the way into the housing (all the way in is Reverse), if it then goes into Reverse gear OK the cable adjustment is off.

If the adjustment is OK you need to install a pressure gauge in the rear servo to see if it's getting full pressure. (200+ psi)

Badly out of adjustment rear band or as mentioned, servo seals leaking, reverse requires almost full line pressure.

Chizler...you were right on. Cable was out of adjustment. I checked for reverse like you said...and then ran thorough the procedure in the manual. That got it close but when engine warmed up I had neutral in reverse but at least R button stayed in when I pushed it in. Backed dial off a bit and now all gears work when cold and hot. I'm relieved but not done yet. Today I tried to install pushbuttons back in correct location but cable is most definitely too short. Not sure what this cable is out of. Perhaps it's out of a 64 console car? I imagine finding a stock cable that's long enough is out of the question though.
