My 56 Dodge has an LA small block and is set up already with a compressor. I am wondering if it is better to just add AC to the existing factor heat only setup or to remove the heater core and add a complete heat/cooling system from Vintage Air or another aftermarket manufacturer.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you

I can't speak to modifying the stock setup, but I'm installing a Vintage Air Gen II in a '56 Plymouth. The car is under construction and far from running at this point, so I haven't yet encountered all the fit issues, but I've installed VA units in a '64 Valiant and a '73 Dodge truck previously and this Plymouth is by far the tightest fit under the dash. It would be even tighter if all the stock bundles, speaker, cowl vents and radio were being retained.

If going with the aftermarket, I suggest you do a lot of research on the physical shape and size of the evaporator. I made cardboard evaporator mockups to fit check before buying, and some manufacturers offer their own mockups for this purpose.

Due to limited space, trying to add A/C to the existing heater box isn't for the timid. I took the easy route and just got an under-dash hang-on unit for my LA powered '56 Plymouth.

Thank you.
I appreciate the input. My car has been apart for much longer than I want to admit and I don't remember how tight it was under there.
At least I know now that I will plan on eliminating the factory heater box and fine and aftermarket heat + AC unit that will fit.
