Extreme Veteran Posts: 395 Location: upstate new york | Forward Lookers, I'm planning on replacing shocks on my 57 New Yorker...the ones on the car are at least 40 years old if not older....I've seen pricing from $20 per shock to $200 per shock....what are other folks using and happy with? Thanks, billy

Expert Posts: 2003 Location: Branson, MO | On my '59 DeSoto, I just replaced the originals with the standard replacement shocks that look like the factory originals (eBay). Probably not the best for handling but they are reasonably priced and look like they are supposed to and are better than the originals as far as the handling is concerned. I'm confident they will last for a long time as I only put about 2000 miles a year on the car. If you are going to be driving your car somewhat like an everyday driver, then I'd check out the advantages of the more expensive units as they may provide a better value to you in the long run.

Expert Posts: 2490 Location: Kansas City, KS | The KYB's are about the best shock for the money for 57-61 Forwardlooks. You can get them from most vendors for around $35 each. KYB Gas-a-Just series Front - KG4507 (need some of the rubber bushing trimmed to fit) Rear - KG5511 Gabriel part numbers for reference. Gabriel gas shock asorbers Front - Gabriel 82072 Rear - Gabriel 81469

Location: Under the X in Texas | What Don said, plus you will have to narrow the lower front shock eye bushings on a bench grinder to get them to the width of the bracket on the control arm. Keep cooling the bushing in a coffee can of water as you grind on it.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9666 Location: So. Cal | These cars are so long that they really do benefit from a good shock. I installed the KYB's on my '58 Desoto and couldn't be happier. They work very well. I run Monroe spring-loaded overload shocks on the rear to help with the weight of running the car with a full load of people since I often have 6 people riding in it.

Expert Posts: 1488 Location: Florida | And until April 30th, there's a $40 rebate on a set of four KYB shocks... one of the least expensive vendors out there is Shock Warehouse http://www.shockwarehouse.com/ and they have free shipping. Expert Posts: 1488 Location: Florida | No problem, glad to help. Just be sure to follow the rebate instructions - they need the completed rebate form, a printout of the dated sales receipt and the UPC bar code from each box. Not much work for $40!
