I have what I believe to be a Gm rear axle in my car that I'd like to replace with the original axle or one close to what the original would have been. Can someone tell me what the correct length of the axle was in this car originally and if I should put a mopar rear end back in or would a ford rear end be better.

I believe the rear track is:

Rear Track 59.6"

perch is 44.5 " approx.

B body: B-body, 62-70 59.2" 44.0" Use 1965 and later for no tapered axles (don't ask)!

Cudas/challenger axles will work too: E-body, 70-74 60.7" 46.0" perch seperation

These two axles have emergency brakes. 1958s didn't. It was on the drive shaft.

The spring perches don’t need to be moved in order to install the axle. Most leaf springs will allow 1/4” of side movement to permit the installation easily. You can purchase new Mopar Performance spring perches from Jeg's for $11.69 a pair if you feel the need to relocate them.

And then there are these:

I believe the rear track is:

Rear Track 59.6"

perch is 44.5 " approx.

IMO track isn't a very useful dimension.

All '57-'61 FL rear ends are 60 7/8" overall width drum-to-drum and the perch centers are 45.5" apart.

60 7/8" drum to drum as in outside of drums or to the flange faces? Someone has a b body 8 3/4" reAr end that measures like 55" flange to flange was wondering if it would work but they don't know what it came out of. What is an average price for a correct 57-59 mopar rear end complete drum to drum?

The original 58 axle would have splined axles with a castle nut that hold on the drums. Some people swap them
out for the modern axle with self adjusting brakes and integral e-brake, which is what i am doing now. Does your
transmission have the drum parking brake on it?

Your tranny sounds right, p brake on it/drive shaft. Axles should be scrap weight price. They suck to work on. Lots of people swap to nontapered after 1964 axles with the emergency brake back there.

60 7/8" drum to drum as in outside of drums or to the flange faces?

Drum-to-drum means from the outside of one drum to the outside of the other...IOW, from one surface where the wheel mounts to the other surface where the wheel mounts.

A housing that is 55" flange-to-flange is from a '68-'70 B-body which has 44" spring perch centers. The best fitting later 8 3/4" would be from a '65-'69 C-body.
