Does anyone know if it's possible to swap what appears to be an original 57 torqueflite tranny for an aluminum 727 torqueflite in a 57 Firesweep Shopper? We've been told the 727 is better equipped for towing, lighter and overall a superior transmission. And we happen to have one handy that can be rebuilt for a lot less money than rebuilding the original- according to the shop that will be doing it. Just don't know if it will work. Any help, thoughts, advice will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the board.

Unfortunately, due to crankshaft design, the 727 won't bolt up to any pre-'62 engine without an adapter. When you factor in the cost of the 727, the adapter, and driveshaft mods you're money ahead to just have the original rebuilt.

Don't forget about the shift linkage and throttle pressure governor linkage...Certainly not a weekend project.

A lot depends on what the op has in mind long term. If the trans-shop guy wants a small fortune to re-do the original trans then a swap may, ultimately, work out even with the additional work and higher finished cost. I'll suggest to the op that making a list of all of the work/parts/costs may be helpful and that he really needs to shop around.

They quoted over 2k to rebuild the original, about 1k for the 727. I was also told that the original is air cooled and the 727 is not. Guessing that will add to the cost also. Doesn't sound like there is a convincing argument for going with the 727. The plan is to use the wagon as a tow vehicle for a 2500lb trailer, but not as a daily driver. Thank you for your input.

"Wayfarer" didn't mention it, but he makes a really good adaptor for the 727. I've used them & am happy with them. If you break down on a trip you can get the TF repaired, where getting an early TF repaired on the road would be a hassle. An Aux tranny cooler with fan should keep you from changing radiators.

Over $2k for a rebuild seems high. Call around for better quote.
