Temporarily suspended to cool off Posts: 316 | So I knew something was up with my '60 phoenix when I saw parking brake cables zip tied to the rear sub frame. I finally got around to checking the casting numbers and found kind of what I thought I would see, 2070741. I also don't see the full contact style adjusters on the drum backing plates. It all looks very much like what I had under my '64 polara. Any guesses on what would be under the car? I havent measured the width of the axles, so I don't know what the width of the axle actually is. I don't think it's a case of someone swapping in a '741 third member into the origonal axle because of the spoon adjusted type rear drums. All in all this could be a good thing right? Does it mean the drums no longer fit on a taper? that's probably good. Suregrip units are esier to find for the '741 right? I'm thinking the car should have had a 1820657 carrier.

Expert Posts: 1748 Location: Alaska | First of all, You don't tell us if it still has a big nut showing on the end of the axle, if so it most likely came from a 62-64 Chrysler or Dodge 880. The 741 diff. has a 1 3/4" pinion diameter which is a little stronger than the 657 carrier. If the axle ends are flat flange type, it could have come from any number of different vehicles.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8953 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | oops , 741 has the same dia. pinion shaft as the 657 , 1 3/8 . 742 has 1 3/4 --------------------------later

Expert Posts: 1748 Location: Alaska | Oops, my mistake, the 741 axle is the same as the 657. The 742 axle is 1 3/4" at the pinion. No the splines are the same, you can install any of the 8 3/4" rear diffs. in your housing with the only difference being a slightly shorter axle with the suregrip.

Expert Posts: 3802 Location: NorCal | If it has brake cables going to the rear and adjusters on the rear brakes it's not likely the original rear end because the '60 had the parking brake on the transmission. Pop a hub cap and see if it has the nut on the axle shaft end; if it does it is likely from a '62-'64 C-body, if not, a later flange-axle rear end has been swapped in.

Temporarily suspended to cool off Posts: 316 | So, the axles do have nuts on the wheel end, so it has the taper retained drums... darn. I really, really, really don't want to deal with those. The car still uses the brake drum located on the rear of the torqueflight for parking brake. The cables going into the axle are connected to nothing. So to recap what I have, Spoon type adjusters instead of the two exposed hex heads for brake adjustment (IE, not total contact brakes), brake cables that are there, but connected to nothing, and a 2070741 carrier. Soooo, 1964 C body setup? Question, so If I have have flange type axles made, (as in, phone up moser and scream TAKE ALL OF MY MONEY) Can I put the flange type drums on there and end up with brakes that work? Because I already kiiiind of want to scream "TAKE MY LUNCH MONEY FOR THE WREST OF MY LIFE" at Eaton to get one of their truetrac limited slips. But.... if i'm just going to then twist the keys right off the wheel end of the axles....
