i finally got to where all the other things in line are done , so i decided to fire er up . had an idle issue that turned out to be using the wrong vac. port on the new
holley . supposed to use the one on the metering block . had a rather bad oil leak on the passenger side v-cover . dumb ass me didn't replace the gasket when i knew it
had @ an 8 inch piece missing on the exhaust side . it was one of those i'll get to it later deals coupled with my feeble brain .
today i just got to the point where i hooked up my timing light to check RPM and set . about a minute or so later it started slowly sputtering and dying . first look , the
clear glass fuel filter 99% empty . so now the new artex 6415 fuel pump in junk . i just ordered a new one from adv. auto . the junk one i think came from rockauto but
i'll have to track that seller down to know for sure . coolant temp is a constant @ 190* with a 26in. alum. rad. and no shroud . idle is where it should be but timing needs
to be redone . all n all the motor seems to be healthy , not a puff of smoke or noise . the clutch linkage i refabbed seems to work great .
through letting it warm up and tinkering on the motor i kept an eye on the fuel filter every chance i got . i noticed that after first ten minutes or so the level of fuel in the filter
was dropping while idling about by 20-30-0% . i tried forcing myself to think it'll be ok , just a fluke but ya'll know how my luck has been . i usually buy parts like that
by the pair but this time i thought with all the fuel pump whoa's ya hear one would be good for now . i'm hoping the adv. auto one is better . i was wanting to drive it to a
local labor day show just to drive it but that aint happenin now either , considerin it needs state inspected also . ------------------------------------later

On fuel pumps, the edelbrock ones are f**king amazing.... OK so they are expensive, but, you know, having something that just simply works, what's that worth?

I wouldn't worry about the visual level in the fuel filter, only a pressure gauge will tell you if you have a fuel delivery problem.

That 1720 mechanical pump is way overkill for the typical motor.

pressure gauge was all over the place from@ 2-8 lbs. then nothing . settin , thinkin , which sometimes can be a problem , i'm wonderin if i used all of the 4 1/2 gal. i put in the
newly cleaned and sealed tank . here's a question for some thought . my gas is sunoco 93 which is clear and can be seen in the clear filter . when the sets in the filter overnight
its piss yellow by the next day . anyhow 5 more gallons are goin in tomorrow ----------------------------------------later

PS. i was wrong about the old fuel pump being an airtex . it's is a carter , boxed in 2014 . the new one is an airtex

Oh you're totally correct, it is, however, it's the quality of the piece. it's above and beyond what anyone else is making. So while the volume of fuel it can deliver is far beyond what any stock or even mild street/strip engine needs, it's dead reliable. The other thing to note with mechanical pumps, once the system is up to pressure, the diaphram is held against the spring in the pump so they don't draw any extra power. The extra volume does come in handy for a street vehicle. The fuel system primes very very quickly with these pumps. So if you are in the habbit of draining the system down for storage (way way smart with ethanol containing fuels) these pumps will get the system purged and pumping really really quickly!

I have found on my tank, that the last 2 gallons or so may or may not pump from the tank. If the system loses prime when it's that low the chances of it repriming without a fight are pretty close to 0! So the of the 4gallons you put in there, in reality, only about 2 gallons are usable. Now, I know on my 318 polyhead, it can burn through that fairly quickly even on jack stands. I mean, I'll set the car at a fast idle so that the charging system remains functioning. It'll burn up about a gallon an hour doing that. I can only imagine that a 383 would guzzle things down even quicker.

uh oh , it was out of gas , little priming the carb , fired right up . ya the fuel left in the tank is probably not where it should be . i had thought about pulling the tank and seeing how much more i could
get the sock down into remaining fuel if there was any but i was impatient to see if just fueling was the problem . i did almost the same thing a few yrs back with the old poly . got about half way (2miles)
from the inspection station and ran out . it'd probably help some if i would of adjusted the sender float level better before adding more fuel . being that the carb is a 750 holley , most likely with mid range jets
from the factory , sucking gallons of fuel , might just get changed to an edelbrock 600 of which i do have . i just want to get in the thing and rip some tires ------------------------------------later

I'll tell you, I just pulled the sending unit on my tank, and the sock was bouncing around down inside of it! (along with 3 mice bodies!) It had rusted off right where the sock should have been. Now I've got the new sending unit on the bench and testing it revealed 6 ohms full and 62 ohms empty. I wired it up, and tested it with the gauge and it does position the gauge on full and empty. But looking at things, when this thing finally starts reading empty, you had darn well better go get some fuel! Now that's with just a short 6" test lead and everything up on the bench, maybe with a length of wire running all the way to the back of the car it'll be a bit more correct but i'm not counting on it! I think what I will do is wire a 5ohm or so resistor in series with it just so when it's reading empty I'll have a bit more fuel left in the tank. That's to be determined. Certainly not factory specifications, but you know, after market parts are what they are. A 3/8ths outlet was more important than a fuel gauge that's perfect.

I dont trust the gauge in the dodge yet

I need to do an economy run and see what the gauge reads when it actually runs out (with 20 liters of fuel in the boot to get me to a petrol station)

At the moment, I pretty much just top it off every time I take it somewhere, no idea how thirsty this engine is

all the fuel, that's how thirsty it is
