I had a gas tank Renu dealer in Rockford, IL restore my gas tank a few years ago and I finally filled it with gas to test run my car today. Well guess what, it leaked and what I found was pretty pathetic. They made this crappy gasket for the drain plug. Should be easy to fix but it's pretty clear that they didn't test the tank and I didn't get my money's worth.

So, what should I do to seal this plug? Nylon washer?

If it was my tank I would use a copper washer and run some thread seal along the plug threads and it shouldn't leak.Make sure the thread seal you use is ok for use with gasoline.

I'm doing just that. I actually found a new plug, the threads are 7/8-20 (an odd size), made by Fragola. It is their part number 491980-BL and it comes with an aluminum washer. The review for the part on summitracing.com was from a guy needing a "drain plug" for a 1949 Dodge, I'm guessing he needed it for his gas tank too.

I don't trust solid metal gaskets. I used an AN900-14 crush gasket on mine....works well with the slight depression in the factory plug. If you have a general aviation airport nearby they probably have a bunch of them.

black permatex on the threads and a little under the cap . screw it down to almost contact , let set for @ an hour or so tighten it down . then let it set up for a couple of
hours . seals it up good considering its oil and gas resistant ----------------------------------------------------later
