The work has finally started on my 61 Newport. The first two pictures are the seats my wife and I installed after my seat guy made me new ones based on some pictures and torn up originals. They are gorgeous. The next 4 or 5 are me driving over to the body man and the car going into his garage. Notice the bumpers are off. They are back from chroming. Next are several pics of my car without paint Tequila makes her paint fall off. It has had an overall rough sand and the front fenders have had a fine sand as well. The chrome has been polishing up really well and there is a really solid body as well. New seats with rug to come; rechromed bumpers; new repop mirrors (driver gets a remote mirror); new chrome with less bruises, new lenses front and back; new rubber everywhere; things that should be natural will be natural (like latches); new trunk script; and going from all over Alaskan White (I hate white!) to Tahitian Turquoise body and Alaskan White roof.

Did the car come from Arizona or is it local? Who ever owned it last took very good care of it. I am in the process of restoring my 2nd 1961 fury. I just got done with the block sanding . The air sanding has started. I got to get metal for mine to cure the cancer on the car. I know not very many of these survived.
I lost my black 1 in a garage fire back in January 2014 I will admit I almost lost my temper . My mistake was not raising the agreed value from 15,000-25,000 . I guess you learn from your mistakes. I will find a way . I am buying what I need for the car . I need door w/s , door bumpers , rear fender panels , the 1s to a '61 dodge would work their identical at the bottom. The car will get there . It will take time and patience. I also plan to convert to electronic ignition

Au contraire, Steph!

Relatively many 1961 Chrysler sedans have survived, and they are seen to be in relatively good physical
and mechanical condition (361 c.i./2 bbl)...the 61's were VERY well built automobiles,
and relatively economical to operate.

My car spent 40+ years in Az and over 10 in Minn plus 5 in Maine but it has always been garaged. Had the car gone through even one Maine or Minn. winter it would be a rust pile. Many used to be in Maine but the survivors are few and far between.

I got the lenses from George Laurie in Australia. It took 2 years but cheaper than Sweden. You can read about him on other posts on this site. He collects the money and then does the work.Beautiful work.

And the work continues. Sand blasting is done and the front fenders are off. If you look at the engine shot you can see where the fender mounts to the front crossover piece that at the join there is bare metal from the factory. No wonder those cars rust out in snowy places. More hand sanding and a little brazing but we will get paint before you know it.

The doors got blown off! They are stripped out too. Even the vents are gone! You get a great shot of the interior without the doors.

Love it! I have owned at least 11 '61 Chryslers - all body styles except wagon. Funny, my first car was a '61 Windsor coupe in Alaskan White and I planned to do it turquoise with a white roof. Never did it because I became a 300 snob. Did have another '61 Windsor 4ds and a New Yorker 4dht as drivers over the years. Let me know if you need any parts!

Fill, sand, repeat! She is making progress! I finally got to see the Tahitian Turquoise in person! Yahoo! It is gonna make that beautiful car just pop! I don't think I fully understood the amount of work to be done, but the guy doing the work is doing crazy good and giving me an education at the same time.

Not sure on the 61 cars, but consider getting the grill side of the radiator support painted black

It should make the grill stand out much better than being able to see the body colour through it

Did I tell you I hate panel beating (I am in the middle of doing a second hood for my dodge)

Thanks tortured. The guy doing the work was saying he hated covering up parts of that piece with black after he did such a great job painting all the surfaces in turquoise but that he hates it more when the car color peeks through the grill. Good call though.

I think the originals were painted black on the front side, but it could have also depended on which plant the car was assembled in as to how they've been painted originally. I've seen originals painted body color, all black, body color on back side with black on the front side. I know in 1960 the inner fenders and core support were generally painted body color at most plants but the L.A. plant and the Windsor plant painted the fenders and the core support all black. There seemed to be a LOT of inconsistencies between plants as to how they assembled and painted things in those days.

Both of the untouched original 61 NYer hardtops that I documented lately have had only the front side of the radiator support painted flat black with a lot of overspray on surrounding sheet metal.

I've seen an original 300-G like that as well, obviously done without regards to care or aesthetics, on the assembly line, almost as an afterthought.

Progress, progress, progress. The inside of the hood took primer then paint in the next picture. Check out the silver latch. Nice detail.

The back end shows it's prime and the next picture has the trunk lid and trunk area all painted up. The final trunk shot shows the new tubes in the trunk to drain.

The last two show around the back door. Again, the latches are looking stand-out.

I can't wait to see the outside all turquoise and white!

LOL. .... Just FYI..... Gary Goers has the BEST trunk weatherstrip for these cars that's ever been available. It's new, and hollow and seals all the way around. I did mine 2 years ago with it.
It's in his catalog on page 16, # W10 http://chryslerclub.org/PDF%20files/GOERS.pdf

I've never had any of the solid rubber ones, bought previously for other cars, ever seal all the way around.

I've fallen behind in my updates. Three hail Marys and some new pics will hopefully absolve...

Here the engine compartment is detailed. Then the nose gets reassembled and the insides of that get sprayed...

Looking great! A big YES to Tahitian Turquoise!! It looks very close to the color on my 60 Saratoga which is a non stock color that's been applied, and from now on I'm calling it "tahitian turquoise" :-) even though it wasn't available in 1960.

I thought that color looked a lot like yours. A really great color for those cars. Was your color a stock color of any sort for some year make or model or did your painter just eyeball something?

Jim, when I bought the car it was already freshly painted and there was a partial can in the trunk, with the color code and the label "Spectramaster Green". No idea where that color may have come from but if I had been the one choosing the color it would have gone back to the factory color of Bluegrass Iridescent ( metallic turquoise). However, it is what it is, and I'M not complaining! I had more paint mixed that I used to finish underhood and in the trunk.

Looks very nice. Pleasant colors. Congratulations ! You should be proud. The red 60 DeSoto that I sold a few years ago was in the movie "The Sandlot", they filmed it here in Salt Lake City. They paid me 125.00 to use it. The lady literlly drove it 25 feet and parked the car in front of Vincent drug where all the kids were. I sure would be cruising that turquois beauty around !!!

Thanks, its cool to see your car on TV.

I've heard horror stories when movies "take" your special car for a movie. Sometimes they are respectful and sometimes not. I'm glad your experiance was good.
