User has resigned from board | need a good old fashion thick cork ? or what ever they used back in the day trans pan gasket, both 60/61 trans pans leak, it seems to be the rear of the pan on the 904s, the very back center of pan where it attaches has an indentation that doesnt completly cover the gasket, if that makes any sense, u can actualy see part of the gasket uncovered, that seems to be the spot where its leaking, the 60 never ever leaked, but since new gasket, its leaking like the 61, which has always leaked, only leaking form pan gasket no where else, any recomendation

User has resigned from board | rtv is a no no, I think I might be over torque the pan bolts, its tempting to check them and give them a snug, I believe the new pan gaskets are thin er than the old style gaskets,

The most important thing is to check the oil pan - most probably, someone overtightened the bolts during the years and this makes the pan bulge out around all the bolt holes. Mount a round shaft in your bench wise and carefully straighten out the material with a hammer. I Always use a very thin layer of Brown Death (Permatex) on the pan side - be careful not to get any inside the pan. This glues tha gasket to the pan and ease future service as well as ensures a tight oil pan. Tighten the bolts with a torquewrench according to the FSM.

User has resigned from board |
rtv is probably okay, but i live under "murphys law" hard to see, but at the top of the picture , is where I find it difficult to seal, why it has that indentation unknown, aftermarkets do not have that feature, iv order 2 new modern gaskets that should cure my drip, also I will be sure not to over tighten the pan bolts, I will follow the repair service instruction
Edited by 196061SAVOY 2015-04-20 9:51 PM (904pan-1.jpg) (murphylaw.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 904pan-1.jpg (5KB - 124 downloads) murphylaw.jpg (152KB - 132 downloads)

User has resigned from board |
here's another one on murphy's list, replace your intake/ exhaust gasket, clean and touch up the intake and exhaust manifolds , put everything back together, start her up, running good no missing, smooth as silk , take her for a run, here's the murphy's law part ,the float needle gets stuck open, stalls in the middle of the road at 6am in the morning, carbs flooding out and over, your nice clean intake, no tools, nobody around, unsafe to leave,( might be up on blocks and striped when u return with tools) out of the shadows a police car, officer just happens to have a 9/16 ,1/2" wrench, loosen up the fuel line, remove and replace the needle, fire her up ,all's well. next time u see a hard working peace/police office, give him/her a thumbs up!!!!!!!
Edited by 196061SAVOY 2015-04-26 10:58 AM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 314 Location: Fairfield County, CT | Where is this thread going? Anyway, I used a Felpro gasket from Autozone sealed with Mopar spray gasket sealer. Worked great and I don't worry about getting any RTV into the tranny. Flattening the bolt holes is a must for proper tightening.
