Any of you people over 50 years old PLEASE get the shingles vaccine. It was on my list of things to do, but, I didn't get it in time. I was diagnosed early Jan and got the anti-viral meds in plenty of time. The nasty rash healed up within about 10 days and I thought I was home free. WRONG! The so-called post herpatic pain is awfull! It is a 24 hour a day torment! This pain can continue for weeks, months or years. No treatment!!

I have it on the right side of my face. The best description I can give is that it feels like bee stings with the accompanying pain which gives way to itchiness.

The vaccine is only about 60% effective (depending on what stats you believe). In retrospect, I would gladly take those odds!! The vaccine was only released in USA in 2006 and in Canada in 2008 so, in all fairness, the stats are very recent and subject to constant revision.

I generally do my" computer work" in the evenings. My worst time of the day with respect to the shingles. I apologize if my posts have seemed abrupt or confrontational. Please chalk it up to this darn continual torment!

Greg

You will see reference to "zostavax" and " zostavax II" as vaccines. They are both essentially the same. The difference is how they need to be stored. Zostavax requires freezing and zostavax II only requires refrigeration. No big deal as long as the pharmacy and/or doctors office deal with it properly. Both need to be kept "cold" until injection. There is only a 30 minute window between refrigerator/freezer to injection in either case.

A friend of mine had shingles appear in her mouth! She lived in pain for a couple of months. Getting the vaccine is something I've blown off but will consider it on my next check up. Hope all goes well for you.

..Do NOT wait to get your vaccine!

"I was THAT close to getting the 'cure' !!! (that's YOU; not me speaking).

Ask Greg if he was glad that he procrastinated in getting his shot.

Darn, Greg, that is awful. My father had a dose of shingles when he was 75 years old, and he said it was the most painful thing he endured. Finally, after a year, it subsided.

Yes, Neil, that is why I started by saying PLEASE get your vaccine!

Thanks, John. In fact, the longer I put up with this the more fortunate I feel. Just imagine this; a friend of mine was diagnosed with shingles in his mouth and Bell's palsy at the same time!!------- !! On Mar 27 he will have suffered with this for a year!!

My "bee stings" seem rather small in comparison. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it goes away and doesn't get worse!

I sympathize with you as I had a bad case of shingles when I was a young lad under the age of 10. I had a bad rash that went around my chest and back and was very itchy and unsightly. I don't remember how long I had it, but it seemed like a year.I must have picked it up after I had had a bout with the chicken pox previously as the two are related. This was in the 1950s though and vaccines were not as readily available then.

Anyone over the age of 50 should get the shingles vaccine these days whenever offered as shingles is no fun. It hurts, it itches, and it seems to take a long time in going away.Just my two cents worth.

Greg,
Can you use those freezing patches, made for sport injuries, to "freeze" the area, and make it more tolerable?

Brad,
It's the neuralgia that sometimes follows the shingles. The area actually is numb and yes, a cold compress in the evenings does help. In my case the upper eyelid is numb so I have the feeling something is stuck in my eye.

Thanks for the thought. I'll look into it.

Greg---Sage advice. I'm in my 60's and took the vaccine a number of years ago. My father, in his 70's, had shingles on his back and down the backs of his legs. He suffered without complaint for about a year and then it cleared up. No one needs this awful disease especially if it can be prevented or forestalled somewhat.---Fred

Thanks, all.

It has been 4 months now and the symptoms have diminished quite a bit ----- or ----- I'm getting used to it!!?

In any case, over 50, get the vaccine. Certainly better odds with than without!

If you've had chicken pox (and who hasn't) you are a candidate for "shingles" to smack you down badly. I had the shot last year after my heart surgery because I didn't want to complicate my life even more with the pain and suffering of shingles (my mother had it). Not sure if Zovirax (acyclovir) tablets helped or not but we found a bottle when we cleaned her house out after she passed (for other reasons) in 2014.

Get the shot.

I too had shingles on my face a few years ago now. It started feeling like a simple pimple behind my ear for a week or so. Then one day I was playing a game of pool with a friend. At the beginning of the game I felt fine, and as quick as by the end of that game I felt like I needed to go to ER. It had spread to my mouth and at the worst of it, felt like a dentist was drilling into the root of every tooth on one side of my mouth simultaneously, without anaesthetic. The pain could only be described as demonic. The ER administered the antidote in time and I was ok a couple of weeks later thankfully.

Hi Glenn,
I'm so pleased that you escaped! I started this thread and still, today, my upper eyelid, eyebrow and back into my scalp is still dead numb. A constant irritant that one sort of gets used to. The BEST news is that I have not had that horrible neuralgic pain!! I, too, supposedly got the antiviral meds within the prescribed timeframe!

People ----- GET THE SHOT !

Greg from my deaply heart I wish a fast and complete recovery from shingles. I know it's a virus causing the shingles and very hard to fight against.

Kind regards,

Dieter
