And I'm pretty sure these photos are from 1960!

I've been trying to lend John D. a hand (or as much as I am able to from 2800 miles away) with preparation for the Carlisle show this summer. I recently had the pleasure of working with Scott from Crosstown who was able to supply me with a few cans of Golden Lion paint for my Fury engine transformation. I'd asked Scott if he had any old dealership photos which he indeed had on the walls of his office!

I thought it would be a shame if I didn't share these with everyone. So...without futher ado.....here are some shots of a photo of Crosstown from circa 1960. Note the Simca sign, the DeSoto sign, the Valiant sign (remember....Crosstown is a cadre Dodge dealership and Valiant was a stand-alone marque for it's first couple of years), and the Forward Look logos on the Crosstown's sign. Of course, for all you Plymouth nuts (myself included) note the early production 1957 Plymouth on the front used car line! (Wide under grille openings...) I wonder what it was traded in on? Being a Plymouth, maybe Turnbull Motors sold it new? Maybe it was traded on a new '60 Chrysler Windsor??? Fun to think about....

Wonderful! Beautiful pics!

We should get a thread started with only photos of FL-era dealerships.

Do you have an address for Crosstown that we can add to the NDC list of dealers?

Thanks

Bob

Great pic! I see the windows of the Showroom are pasted with "sellout 57" so guessing yearend of 1957. Is that building to the left the Molson Brewery? I remember the newer "Crosstown" was not far from it. John

Hi Bob:

The answer to your question is: Yes, but. It's my understanding, rightly or wrongly, that they were located on the corner of Jasper Avenue and 109 Street, in Edmonton. This is roughly where that photo was taken. Sometime during the 1960s, (1964?65?66?...pre-dates myself by at least a couple of years) they moved to 10405-120 Street in Edmonton. This, as lebaron413 remembers, was Crosstown's dealership location for many years. And yes, this was right by Molson Brewery. About two or three years ago, they moved to their new digs. Here's their current address:

Crosstown Chrysler
15520-123 Avenue
Edmonton, AB
T5V 1K8
780-488-8412

The parts manager there is good to deal with. However, I wouldn't get anyone's hopes up about old dealership records. No doubt, these would have been cleaned up during dealership moves over the years.

Here's another interesting little photo:

I remember as a young 'un seeing this dealership sticker on many a car around the city. A few years ago, I was out at a not quite so local boneyard. I saw a Forward Look Plodge out there with a Crosstown logo on it. If take a close look at the dealership logo with the "Motor City" portion across the top chopped off, that was the logo that was on the Plodge I saw. It's likely that Crosstown sold this particular Plodge new. Sorry guys... I can't remember more specifics than that about the car.

Hi Bob (again).... you might wish to add this to you old dealership record list as well:

Turnbull Motors Limited (a Chrysler Plymouth dealership)
7821-104 Street
Edmonton, AB

Dealer number **MIGHT** be 8467 or C8467 (No warranty...expressed or implied :p )

I don't have a postal code for them. I know for certain that Turnbull was in business during the FL era. Turnbull was taken over by the dealer principle's son, Stan Turnbull in 1977. They continued on until late 1988- early 1989 until the dealership was sold and renamed (but stayed at this location) to South Trail Plymouth Chrysler. Some time in the early 2000s, the dealership moved and became Southtown Chrysler Jeep.

There is nothing left of the old dealership. Turnbull was in a very trendy (now) area of Edmonton referred to as Old Strathcona, and real-estate there is costly, and in high demand. Turnbull's used car lot is now a strip mall, and the new car building is a Save-On foods. I presume most of the dealership was torn down to build the supermarket.

Hi Bob:

One more....

You should be aware of the existence of another Chrysler Plymouth dealer in the Edmonton area called Miller Motors. This dealership went out of business in the mid-1970s. All I can tell you about these folks is that (according to my shop teacher in HS), they had an excellent reputation and were also located on Jasper Avenue here in Edmonton.

I also remember Millers & Turnbull, my Dad was a Chrysler man for many years, and he purchased quite a few from Turnbulls. This should help with some memories;

I worked for Miller Motors, Crosstown Motor City and then Edmonton Motors. Moved to Ottawa and worked for Surgenor's and just retired from a VW dealership. Miller Motors got me started in the Auto industry for sure.

Just a reminder to everyone of not only Crosstown but the Smalltown dealerships also. The one that comes to mind is Legal Motors Legal Alberta owned and operated by the same family since 1960 I believe probably the only one left in Alberta that's been operated that long by the same owner.
