Veteran Posts: 111 Location: Egg Harbor Township, NJ | Does anyone know if a 518 o.d. trans out of a 92 dodge truck needs a computer to work if i wasn't going to use a lock-up converter with it? I found one locally and i could really use it to get back and forth to school so long as it wouldn't need a bunch of electric junk to work it.

Expert Posts: 2824 Location: Snohomish, WA. | I think 96 was when they went from a 3-wire connector and no computer needed to an 8 wire connector and computer needed. Somewhere in that era. But, computers are available for the late model versions too. 95 is a good year to go for. You would want a tranny out of a 3/4 ton van or PU on a 360. 4-wheel versions use a different tail piece on the OD portion, and the heavier vehicles have more of the sought after hard parts internally, if you are going to put any real torque to them. There are heavier OD springs, extra clutch discs, and extra clutch pack springs in the heavy duty versions, which allow more torque to be put to it. A 46RE is good, but the max is a 48RE. If putting it on a big block, an adapter plate is needed because this transmission is set up to mate with the small blocks. There are also other conversion plates available. I believe most of the 48RE units were on the the diesels, which are another totally different bellhousing. You can also cut the bellhousing off and put on a "Super Bell" to adapt it to your engine. But that seems like major surgery unless your bell housing is already cracked or something. Good luck with the project. I am also chasing that "right" 518 tranny for my Plymouth. OD would be a worthwhile mod. Mike

My conversion parts are in the mail and should be here Monday or Tuesday. I'll be sure and take pictures and let you know how it works once installed. More to come in the near future.

Expert Posts: 3577 Location: Blythewood, SC | I had an A500 in my truck for a while. (the stock 318 killed it) You will have a plug with three prongs. You send 12 volts into the center pin. Then the other two pins go to two toggle switches. From the switch to a ground. Yes, I am sure about this. If you go the other way, nothing works. Trust me here. One toggle switch activates the O/D, and the other the TCC (torque converter clutch). That year will have a lockup converter. A non-lockup converter will NOT work.

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | I finally got the trans. conversion kit installed on my transmission and it shifts great. I may take the valve body back out and increase the detent spring pressure just slightly but that's my preference and would work fine as it came from the manufacturer. The last picture is of some spacers I made to lower the cable just slightly so it didn't rest right on the shape edge of the trans. case but a piece of rubber hose would work also. Sorry about the quality of the last picture, I'm not to steady, free hand, with a camera. I got it from Imperial Services and can supply their address and phone number if anyone is interested. Now to make the adapter plate work so I can mount it to the back of my big block. That doesn't seem to be as easy a project as this was. How about a few photos of the cable interface to the pushbutton selector as well, for our illumination? GREAT job! I think a must for anyone who wants "modern" coupled with "classic" in these old vehicles!

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | CAN DO !! It connects to the pushbutton assy the same way as the original cable, no modifications needed there. The new cable is supplied in the kit and the pushbutton end is made the same as the old cable. Pictures in a day or two.

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | Hank, I finally got some pictures of the button end of the cable. As you can see it required NO modifications at all. I haven't squeezed the cable slot shut yet as I need to get it in the car first. This really was a very simple conversion. I wish everything went this easily. Expert Posts: 1812 Location: Slidell La. | Hi Larry , been looking at your album for a while and can t seem to understand how the adapter works ,and how thick it is . What I m trying to figure in my head is that if the tranny is pushed back any amount because of the adapter that would pull the converter that much off of the pump . So if the adapter is a half inch thick , the converter in out a half an inch to meet with the flexplate . Wouldn t that be less contact surface where the converter meets the pump ? How much does a adapter like that cost ?

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | CHARLIE, I'm sorry, maybe I didn't mention it and forgot to show pictures of it, BUT, the adapter kit comes with another flex plate to match up with the relocated started and a spacer and longer grade 8 bolts to space it all back and keep the converter in the proper possition. The next time I get up to the shop I'll take some pictures of those items too. I've got the trans. "test fitted" right now so I can work on getting the throttle cable down to the trans. mounted and working properly. I plan to have EVERYTHING working and adjusted before I try to put it in the car. That makes modifications, etc. alot easier. JOHN, That's correct, there is no "PARK" position. I have already taken can of this problem. When I ordered the rear disc brake kit from AAJ Brakes I ordered the rear calipers with "E Brakes". All I have to do is purchase the cables that mount in the calipers and attach them to the cable that "now" goes into the brake drum on the back of the trans. I'll still have the parking brake but it will be on the rear wheels now instead of the end of the transmission. If someone wants to make this conversion, but doesn't have rear disc brakes, they tell me there is a very nice set up that goes on the differential pinion yoke that has a small disc and manually operated caliper to hole the driveshaft from turning, but I haven't ever seen one installed. You can see the lever and return spring on the rear caliper on my rearend housing. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=98&... And obviously I need to get "A BUNCH" more pictures of the trans. adapter and flexplate to help answer some other questions. MORE TO FOLLOW. Edited by RoyalGate 2007-05-31 4:42 AM
