Hi guys,
Does anyone know anything about the '59 Firesweep that's for sale in San Francisco? Or is the owner on here?
It seems like I've been seeing it for sale forever so wondered what the deal was, bad buyers or bad seller?
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers.

I've been following the car for 3 years now. It's a base Firesweep coupe, only has power steering and TF trans. Radio, that doesnt work, same with the heater. Rust around the rear window,in all the rockers rather badly, and poor trunk repair. The car is just degraded from being in Colorado and then spending time in new mexico before ending up in san fransisco. Only unique feature is the fact its one of the only surviving dog dish desoto's out there. It turns off buyers due to no few options, and bad rust. Considered buying it myself but I'm still not sure with all the future rust repair that will be needed. Owner is Nick Nichols....he has a dozen plus classic rare cars, and generally this one has sat out more than others.

That's great info, thanks, the lack of options wouldn't put me off, I quite like strippers, but if the rust is too bad then I guess it's just not worth it. I might fire off an email though and see if I can have a chat with him, the name is familiar so maybe he is on here or possibly was on the old forum.

He claims to have done some patch repair....but I doubt it's been done with metal. Here are all the images from over the years, back in 2010, before the repair and after it... http://s1306.photobucket.com/user/57Kelii/library/1959%20Desoto?sor...

Thanks for the photos Kelii, I also got an email off a friend out there who also had some info and photos.
I've also had a reply off Nick and we'll see where we go with it but initial feeling is it needs a bit too much bodywork for what I want. I'm looking into a couple of other cars in the area so I'm not rushing into anything.

LOL you think you're going to get a little-rust to rust-free 2-dr hardtop for 5-6K? Not in this life, those days are LONG gone my friend. Even at 10K I doubt a rust-free example can be had. If rust is a consideration why look for a car in the San Francisco bay area? Coastal areas are notorious for rust! Good luck with your search but you better check your budget if you're looking for rust free. 5-6K gets a rusty non running car, 10-13K still un-restored, rust, bad interior but probably running car. 20K is where you start to find nicer unrestored cars with little to no rust hardtops that you can drive.

Not sure about those prices....once every year or two you can find a rough gem coupe for 10 k or less...I have found a number in my 4 years, looking at FL cars for sale. People think the prices of classic cars are increasing...but I'm not too sure. With the crash of 2008, and the fact most people who drive these cars are 40-50 plus...the market is growing....smaller. Demand drops.....and so will prices. Car did not sell back in 2008 for 6k....and 6 years later it still does not sell. I doubt people would pay more for less...as you seem to state, inflated car prices are nothing short of greed.

I don't intend to bash the seller of this car or anything but Ive seen him also list several cars as well as a '58 Desoto Adventurer for YEARS off and on so I'm not so sure he's serious about selling his cars and I can't say I blame him. I have a hard time letting go too. My point being finding a buyer willing to pay or not I'm not sure the owner is serious about selling from what I've seen over the years. It's getting MUCH harder to find the rust-free "gem" as time goes on.. and if I were looking to buy I sure wouldn't count on it.

There are still nice 2 dr coupes out there...just gotta be on it and search search...The last two coupes I bought were very reasonable!...and both way under 10K..one was almost half of that with rebuilt drivetrain and another $3K in parts included and 5 new wide white tires!!! Usually you find the great deals when someone has lost interest in the restoration...those tend to be the best deals.

Just my one cents worth...G

find me a 2 dr 59 dodge ht for under 5k then...

find me a 2 dr 57-58 Desoto ht project for under 5k...

find me a 2 dr 57-58 Chrysler ht project for under 5k...

they are unobtanium...

These are not unheard of but they are nearly impossible to find and can take a few years. Sometimes they pop up and are gone in an instant but Im saying these are not easy to find anymore and they aren't getting cheaper at all. Project cars are now edging up to near 10k. None of this 3-4k stuff anymore for a complete reasonable 2dr ht car.

I mostly agree with you Mike, but just 2yrs ago or so, I bought this '57 Windsor coupe on ebay for $1100. It needs floor work & minor lower quarter work, but I was literally the only bid on the car at the time. The only thing I have done to it was to get the motor running, replace the gas tank, install hubcaps and repaint the white parts. Just recently, another red '57 Windsor coupe project sold in Illinois (I think) for $2k, and I just picked up a new '58 New Yorker coupe project for free (came as a package deal). So they are out there, but unrestored versions almost always need quite a bit of metal work. Most people shy away from them because of it.
