Oh, the Craigslist ad says it was posted 25 days ago! I figured this one would go quickly. Even with funky wheels and quick paint - it looks like a great car for the money.

If this were a '61 or a '60 you would have to multiply the price by a factor of 3 or 4!

Maybe we will see it flipped soon - I hope not! It is nice to think of a new owner getting a great car for a good price and driving it all over the place!

I hate to tell you this (naw, I'm really loving it!), but a '62 Newport droptop is hardly a muscle car. The standard engine for that car then was the 361 CID mill with a single 2V Stromberg carb giving it a rated 265 horses. From the pics, it looks like it has that mill, although the air cleaner may conceal a 413 with a single 4V Carter, assuming it is stock. Unless that blue block is something like a '67 375 (or more) HP/440 (or more) CID power plant, that boat most likely has a 0-60 time of about 7.5 -- days, that is.

You cruise around with a baseball cap on (so whats left of your hair dosnt blow away) and a pair of sunnies on and look cool

Dont need to go fast in one of those

Point well taken, Joe! I was just thinking of the styling aspects. If this were a '60 Windsor convertible with the standard 383 it would be sold for a ton more cash. Did they make a Newport convertible in 1961? Maybe it was only the Windsors then too. Either way, you are correct - apples to oranges! This car is in no way comparable to the 413 big boys of '60 and '61.

I'd rather cruise around in my '65 fuel-injected 375 HP/327 CID Vette vert. It has the "side-mount" exhaust system which is comprised of two three-inch pipes with nine half-inch crimps in them, each coming directly off the exhaust manifolds (not tuned, unfortunately -- strictly stock) and no mufflers so I can go down the street and set off car alarms. It's also rather neat when I pull up next to some dude with his windows down and his "music" booming; a few revs to blow some exhaust gas and street debris into his windows is most satisfying! I don't like baseball caps as the bill catches the wind and off they go (I ain't too fond of them anyway), so I prefer the "newsboy" cap as it's more appropriate for an old fudd like me. And while I don't worry about the little hair I have left being blown away, I do hate those few strands getting tangled and knotted when I hit 70+.

Just pulling your chain. Even with those "custom" wheels, it is a nice looking car. BTW, there were 2135 Newport convertibles that came off the assembly line in the 1961 model year. As to color, I prefer red, especially as my Vette is "Rally Red." To quote John Heinrici (GM chief test driver), "All Corvettes are red -- the rest are just mistakes."

Ahhh, Corvette guy

I am a tin top guy myself, but I wouldnt mind comming across a convertible to cruise around in.

I dont think I would really equate this chrysler or any full sized convertible to a sports car one though, but I didnt make that destintion in my above post, so point taken

If I had a vette, I would want it to be a hp monster as well

Back in the days of my misspent youth, I preferred "tin tops" myself as I fancied myself some kind of hotrodder and since drop tops tended to be heavier than two-door hardtops or two-door posts, my real muscle cars were 2-dr H/Ts. The first was the white '60 Fury that I seriously abused from 1960 to 1964. It was replaced by a '65 Sport Fury with the 365 HP/426 CID Street Wedge and with a Hurst equipped 4-speed (a beautiful car: "Medium Red Metallic" with a matching interior). The '65 in turn was superseded by a '67 Dodge Coronet R/T with 375 horse/440 CID engine. All three of these were great street racing machines (the local gendarmes called them "speed contests" with big time fines; fortunately, I was never caught), but the R/T was the best in spite of the Inland Steel shift linkage (it was like trying to shift a piece of spaghetti) and just a ten-and-a-half-inch clutch (I shattered one and my wife did another). Incidentally, "our" first Vette was hers: a '63 300 HP/327 CID and wide ratio 4-speed that she bought used after college when she started teaching. It was an ugly "Saddle Tan" with matching interior ("But it's so easy to keep clean!") You might want to refer to my earlier post about "All Corvettes are red. . . ."
As to Vettes with "monster motors," I am a maverick here as I didn't like the idea of the "Rat" engines (the 396s, 427s and 454s). I thought they were too heavy and adversely affected the steering geometry and I thought (and still do) that Chevrolet should have pursued the development of the small block "mouses" .because I never did like the '63 Split Window Coupe as I thought its rear visibility too poor: in a Corvette, it's kinda fun to see how bad you blasted the guy who tried to fool around with you! Besides, a true "plastic body" guy isn't happy unless he has bugs in his teeth. BTW, the '65 Fuelie I have now represents the one I wanted back in 1964 -- but I couldn't afford it then so I "had" to settle for that '65 Sport Fury.
In fact, I am even more of a maverick in that I never had any great affection for the 426 Hemi except when it is used by expert mechanics, technicians, and even engineers in pure racing situations. For the average "Joe," it was very difficult to keep in tune as it had terrible problems with plug fouling in street use in spite of a versioncalled the "Street Hemi." The earlier "divisional hemis" were far more reliable for normal use.
