I just purchased an under dash record player to install in my '61 Chrysler Newport. The car has factory a/c, and the larger blower box takes up a lot of room under the dash. When I test fitted the record player, it seems that there is not enough room for it without the unit sticking way too far out from the dash. I would also have to make new brackets for it to even bolt up...

Has anyone had any experiences with this? Thanks.

Considering there was only a small percentage of '61 Newports that might have had AC, and that a far lower percentage had the record player by '61, I'm guessing the odds of finding another car with the pair of options installed is slim to none and you will have to be creative to have both in your car.

I don't know how much the AC-fan duct protrudes, but in my thread you'll se how the record changer mounts with the normal fan duct;

I noticed this also happens in an earlier car with a Hifi, no room for the underdash outlet. I would assume they would have left the outlet out, not enough room for both. Does your 61 have a seperate outlet that can be detached?

In '61 Chrysler offered the RCA AP-1, and similar (almost identical) units were available aftermarket. Holes were drilled under the dash for the brackets. I don't have any experience with the Hiway HiFi units, but I believe they attach with very different brackets with hooks that allowed the unit to be removed.

Sven, the floor air vents protrude 4-5 inches out from the firewall. I suppose I could construct some custom brackets to mount the unit, but that extra length needed to clear the floor vents push the record player very close to the front seat. Not sure how it would look or function that close...

Nice job on your unit, BTW!

Anyone know where I can find these pieces that go over the vents? Mine are rusted out. The things under the delete plate.
