Hey All,

I made an order with George Laurie on March 9th, 2012. I ordered front blinker lenses, taillights and a trunk medallion. I knew I would wait, I've read all the other posts on this site but George does beautiful work and is cheaper than Sweden.

George is not a good communicator. I emailed him every three months or so and didn't hear back from him too often.

He discovered he lost my order a month or so ago. He quickly sent me my lenses and will get my medallion to me shortly.

I love my lenses!!!! Thank you George!

Enjoy the thrill I had opening my package.

Yes George makes outstanding parts.

But cashing the checks and not delivering parts or an explanation of delay WITHIN THIRTY DAYS is MAIL FRAUD under US postal law. Personally I think it is absolutely wrong to support a business that is and has been FOR MANY YEARS violating the law.

He did it to me once. Never again.

If he lived in the US, he might be bound by its laws. Personally, I had my big boy pants on and got no surprises. Thanks to this website I knew exactly what I was getting and for anyone who wants their lenses in a month or two for a lot more money, go Swede. I got just what I wanted and expected. Can you say that about every American vendor who you have dealt with?

I am glad to support George while he supports my hobby. He is making stuff I have never seen anyone else do. I am getting a gorgeous trunk medallion for my 61. Thank goodness we have him to make em because I haven't found anyone else. Thank goodness for George!

The lenses looks really authentic! He is already cheating on the customs form by his signature that he sent you a gift and $10 AUD value .. Imagine, that he send gifts all the time all over the world. What a benefactor.

He gets no benefit from marking the form like that. He is doing a favour for his Canadian and British customers. These governments use the form to tax their citizens as much as 100 percent of the value listed. I have seen the Brits do that for stuff I send there.

It took about 6 months for my order to arrive, and I was very happy. George is the ONE guy in the world who makes some of these parts, so a 6-12 month wait is more than acceptable. And Mail Fraud? Customs Fraud? Come on . . . .

A super nice restorer who I know helped me obtain several nose emblems for my DeSoto Firesweep from George Laurie a while back - George considered them to be "seconds" and he was not happy with them, so he had never put them up for sale until he was asked to sell them to me - and he sold them to me for a very reasonable price indeed.

They sure looked good enough to me! The nose emblem on the Firesweep is smaller than the other 3 '57 models, and they are impossible to find, so I was very happy to be able to obtain these emblems from George, "seconds" or no. George is a perfectionist, and all work that I have seen done by him is of very good quality that seems to stand up to the test of time.

George did a set of lenses for me several years ago - I had to wait a bit but the quality is incredible. The taillight lenses especially. Better than you would ever find in an NOS lens and the detail is perfect. Decide if you want to wait for him, but in my opinion the wait is worth it.

George responded to my wanted listing for some convertible interior pieces, something he had left over. He emailed pictures, agreed on price, and mailed it promptly. They arrived in a week, well packaged, and were exactly what I needed to complete a project. Thanks George!

The above email from GregCon is EXACTLY why I continue to post that we need to be aware of the real problems with this supplier. Sure his products are beautiful IF YOU GET THEM. But also you must consider that part of the time GL continues to cash large checks and small ones and just be the WORST type of THIEF.

I'd rather see him run out of business to open the door for someone who is LEGITIMATE to learn to do this and be a good businessman.

In Texas we used to HANG crooks. Still would today if I had anything to say about it. George Laurie, when you read this and make up some new LIES to keep your scheme going, you are considered a disgusting CRIMINAL.

George's business model seems to be: Send me the money and when I get enough requests for the same piece, I'll make them up and send them out. That could be in a month or a year. He keeps virtually no inventory in stock.

There will be a day in the not-too-distant future when folks will be able to download CAD files of any lens or plastic part they need for their car. Then send them off to their favorite 3D printing place and have perfect quality copies returned to them a week later. Then there will be no need for this nonsense.

Ron

I'm not so sure about lenses being able to come off a 3D printing machine

They work by building up layers, not good for something thats see through

I would love to get hold of one to play with and a 3D scanner

LOL, Neil. I'm holding back how I really feel. That story would go into the THREE YEARS it took me to get lenses and that was during the time Larry Jett was acting as a liason between orders and George by holding the money in the states so GL had to make the parts to get paid. It was the worst of times; it was THE WORST OF TIMES.

What a crock of s**te! "I'd rather run him off and open the door for someone legitimate". Really? Dont you think the door is wide open now for someone not so anxious to cash your check? Maybe a former unicorn salesman will step in. We all know what he does. Use him, don't use him. You have facts. Dont keep ranting how youd like to run 'im off. I dont think so.

I've never heard a complaint about his quality. It's just like dealing with SMS. You know you will get quality, but you will wait and wait and wait for the product. Of course, some people have had incorrect door panels from SMS, but Laurie's lenses are spot on. Just be prepared for a year or two of waiting.

Hey 61ChryslerMan, I haven't used GL since that three year order. I'm doing my part to run him off by not buying and by posting. NO, the door is not wide open because people CONTINUALLY order from GL REGARDLESS of the bad news People be STUPID at times. It takes time, money, experience to start up hand cast quality lens business. You just don't put an ad in FL and the orders flood in. Been there, done that.

I have just dealt with George for a pair 59 2dr HT interior lenses,

But i emailed him first to see if he had some already made and ready to ship, he replied within 2 hrs and said Yes, So i paid him on 11th Feb 2016 and they were delivered today 27th feb 2016, so only 16 days to pack and ship and arrive at my home in UK..

So maybe people wanting lenses quickly need to ask first if he has them in stock OR if they have to be made.. As that seems to be the reason for such long waits, as i guess he doesnt make a new batch of lenses until he gets a order for a vast amount..

Oh and the Quality is awesome as others have already mentioned..

Hey OutThere, you really are. I clearly explain the plusses and minuses of dealing with George so people can make an informed decision on their own.

You YELL that I am stupid because of dealing with him. Are you in charge of all international transactions? What a burden.

Aren't you a special person with your own agenda. Do you care about anything except trying to hurt folks?

Don't hold the hate. It will eat a hole right thru you.

George Laurie is an artist and people are jealous to get his products. You may wait years to get his stuff but I can say it was worth it for me!

Make sure you can wait before you spend your bucks with him. It may not be worth it for you!

As "61Chryslerman" said it....George maybe an artist, and like all artist they deliver when they feel like it....

It is actually simple for the people who want to order from him, ask George if the items are in stock, if they are, then pay him with Paypal, after a month waiting if the product is not delivered as promised, just request to Paypal for a refund. For those who have hundred of dollars stuck in Australia for years, got to be hard.

The way I do it with my radio conversions is:
I do all the requested work keeping the owner informed and sending pictures of the progress, then when the radio is completed I do the final test and send a video to the owner with the final product. If the owner is 100% satisfied with the product then he can send me the payment, and the radio is shipped the same day.

This is what happens when some people turn a hobby into a business, they treat it like a hobby but their customers expect it to work like a business. I can certainly see both sides of it but lean toward the customer view. It would be different if there was clear communications but if you're trying to finish your car and you have no clue when you might get a part it is frustrating.

Now where do I get the dome light lenses for my 300F???

Nice '61 Chrysler tail lenses! Wish George Laurie could make similar ones for the '61 DeSoto backup lenses which are the same curved shape as the tails for the Chrysler, but are clear and have different shapes in the designs in the mold. I ordered some from George a few years ago, paid by PayPal (never use anything but PayPal with George because this is the only leverage you have with him; to threaten to file a claim). The '61 DeSoto backup lenses he sent fairly quickly (about 45-50 days) were not up to his standards as they had obvious crack lines and distortions visible from poor sources for his molds. He didn't take the time to try to expertly repair or buff out any cracks in his source lenses--this was obvious. I would rate them as subpar, and nothing I would ever put on my cars. I am currently working with a gentleman in Los Angeles to hopefully make better ones, but he tells me it is not an easy process. These will hopefully be thicker, stronger and should not crack like all original '61 DeSoto backup lenses do. They were built too thin and the 90 degree bend puts a lot of stress on the thin acrylic. A prototype the Los Angeles gentleman sent me shows promise, but it still needs refinement. He is still working on the improvements to this day in his spare time, and it has been about three years! In George's defense, the lenses are difficult to make. Stronger ones even more so. But then again, George is his own worst enemy as a business man, if he can be called that.

Years before, I bought some tail lenses for a '60 DeSoto, and George must have already had a batch made as he sent them in fewer than 30 days. They are of excellent quality. So I have had great luck with George, and luck not so good.

I wouldn't order from him again unless he had pictures to send of the lenses already made and in his stock. And of course use PayPal only. People in need of lenses might e-mail him and ask him to e-mail them back with pictures of the lenses when they are ready to go, and then try sending him 50% upfront by PayPal and the remainder upon delivery. If he is trustworthy, he would trust his customers to pay the balance upon receipt of product. If he doesn't agree to this, you are taking a big risk. This is obvious from all the angry customers he has stockpiled over the past several years. Caveat emptor!

I have to defend George here. I know him personally and visit him 1-2 times a year and live 100km away. He is a ONE MAN operation and he gets the orders, makes the molds, molds them, polishes them, sends out parts for rechroming (hard to find someone good here in OZ) and posts and does all his own admin. I have asked him about putting someone on but he wont because his words " I cant trust anyone to make them like I do". You can bag him all you like but the quality is exemplary. The slowness can be frustrating granted but he will not rip you off. Just remember he is ONE MAN making these for literally thousands of FL owners worldwide. He doesn't just do lenses either, he makes badges and all sorts of associated parts. Also just remember the molds do not last forever before needing to be redone which is all done by him. He is also a modest man and lives in a small modest house and does not live high on the hog with peoples money. He loves FL cars and is passionate about making parts that not many other people do.

"George: I put my Order in with you in October (18th or so). I asked for an update on Nov. 24th (because when I placed my order, you said that you were about to do a run of medallions, so I assumed that they might be ready). I heard nothing. So now it is Jan 18th, 3 months later and I would really like to hear from you regarding my order. Something. Anything. Give me hope."

George responded within hours with:

"Hello David, I am very sorry that I have not sent them out when I was expecting to. I have lost a lot of working time from illness, got nothing done over Christmas where I normal work with ne break, but back on my feet and should get all those emblems I have on order done fairly soon.

I do not make just a couple of each, I must make them in small batches of about a dozen each and I have few differant types to make.
I do take the whole lot to the factory to apply the chrome and or gold at one time but getting them all ready for that is so very time consuming.

So again I am sorry but I am sure you will forgive me when you see them, George."

So he gave me hope. I guess I just need more patience.

I'm sure he is a nice guy and I have seen some nice work BUT THAT IS NO JUSTIFICATION for taking hard working people's money, not delivering promised goods and not replying to emails. There is no excuse to do that unless you are dead. I could post here the ridiculous heart warming tales of hardship and misfortune that he provided me with for years and years but that is nobody's problem but his. He needs to get his s**t together!
