The coils springs I bought for my '56 Plymouth have white markings on one end that I assume are intended to indicate which direction they should be installed. I'm guessing the mark should be up, but haven't been able to find a source to verify that guess. Can anyone point me to that info?

A Picture would help here.

Are these the groves on the bottom flat portion you are referring to?
If so, they designate the last digit of the part number.
The rest of the number, 6 digits, is stamped on the flat side of the flat.
The number of grooves , odd (driver side), or even (pass side), indicate left or right side in which it is to be installed.

The 1st is 1618523 and the 2nd is 1618525,
Both of these are driver side springs

Interesting information. I am curious as to why it made a difference? Do they sit differently? Are they different in tension?

The springs I pictured are for 2 different applications.
The 1618-753 is for 55-56 Dodge standard and 55 Plymouth 3 pass coupe and suburban and is up on E-bay now.
I just posted them as examples to how they are marked for Identification.
I would assume the flat side would be the bottom.

The aftermarket springs I have are from ESPO, and they don't have a flat side. One end has a smear of white paint as the only marking, and when placed on that end the spring stands more vertical than when standing on the other end. Other than that, I can see no difference between the ends.

Gary,

I have used the ESPO springs (and have torn the front end of these cars apart more times then I would have liked to) on my 56 Plymouth. The white end of the spring is the top that goes into the spring pocket. Basically, flip the spring 180 degrees and install.

Thanks Dave, that agrees with what I recall seeing somewhere on another forum, but I don't much trust my memory anymore.
