Location: MN | I have a 60 D500 Ram, the thing idles like really fast, am I missing a spring or??? to idle this thing down. I forget the name of the thing between the carbs isn't it supposed to go in & out to keep idle from falling to low?? Thanks |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The idle should be higher on the rams; 725 - 750 rpms. I Think that you mean the anti-stall unit; see Group 14 in the FSM, Fuel system for proper adjustment |

Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | sounds like the dash pot . test it to hold vacuum . if it doesn't , good luck finding a new one but i think it can be rebuilt for about 90$ if i remember correctly . i'm thinkin i was told about
the rebuild by jc restorations??? but i could be wrong . it was the guy that sells ram manifold elbow reproduction parts in the north west . a new one if found , expect to pay @ 300$ ----------------------later |

Location: Alaska | make sure you don't have a vacuum leak where the manifold bolts to the heads. This will cause a high idle and poor drivability. |

Location: Eastern Iowa | Go through the entire adjustment process as described in the FSM starting with the accelerator pedal angle.
This is the only way to get these things to run right. You will need a short length of 3/16" rod to set the firewall bell-crank. I always use a short length of welding rod or brake tube for this.
The dash pot is not for adjusting the idle speed. If you mess with it, be sure and hold the pushrod while turning the adjusting screw or you will tear the diaphragm and the unit will be junk if it's not already.
The dash pot adjustment is the last thing you do and is to control the engine from stalling if it starts to loose vacuum while stopped w/ your foot on the brake and/or the A/C turned on. It's purpose is to momentarily "bump" up the idle to prevent a stall.
Chances are , if you do find an NOS unit, it will already be junk from a dried out diaphragm. I would be sure it holds vacuum BEFORE purchasing!! Ask me how I know this!! I got burned w/TWO of the darn things and had to have them both rebuilt.
Again, be sure to hold the push rod while turning the adjustment screw!!! |
