Hey... I'm new here but not to Mopars or old cars. I am new to Forward Look ownership though. I live in East Texas and just purchased a highly optioned 4 dr sedan that lived in a barn near my house for the past 20+ yrs. I only found out about it because of the estate sale of the former owner. It's in pretty good shape considering it's age. I just got the Broadcast Sheet out from on top of the glove box liner this evening.

The Broadcast Sheet is a little too faded to show up good in a photo but I would love some help decoding it!!

Well, it's late, and I'll go thru the files manana, but, just looking at your info, you have one heavily optioned Custom Royal 4-door
sedan, there!

Your car is of relatively early production, o.o.a. 10/23/58; built in Detroit at the Hamtramck Dodge Main assembly plant.

From the top: you've got "Neutral" upholstery color, with Power swivel seats, in a Deluxe 2-tone paint scheme, with Rose Quartz on its fins,
roof and lower, with Coral on the remainder of the body.

TorqueFlite trannie and a rear parcel shelf speaker.

Air conditioning; not unusual on such a heavily optioned top-of-line sedan.

Your "Roof Molding" is actually the quarter panel 'gills'.

You've got all tinted glass with a shaded windshield.

it's got the standard "Economy" rear end gear ratio of 2.93:1

Its tires are/were 8.50x14" Rayon cord white walls.

It was a special ordered car that was made-ready for immediate customer drive-away at the dealership, after it was delivered
to it by a Truck, and later driven-away to the dealership from the Depot where it was transported.

If the car lived its life in East Texas, that might explain the 'driving' part of its delivery; maybe the owner obtained it, there, and drove it
to his home.

The Broadcast Sheet that you found was attached to the back of the dashboard, and its arrival at the dashboard sub-assembly station
told them to build an all-black Custom Royal dashboard with a rear speaker fader switch and a remote left-side mirror, and a day/night
mirror, and A/C control panel

WTH....here comes your car's options groups: Ornamental: fin end inserts, DUAL antennae, chrome license plate frame

Deluxe Appearance; 2-tone steering wheel, SPINNERS, stone shields, clock

Deluxe Radio: heater, back-up lights, LT REMOTE mirror, Day/nite mirror, radio

Safety: P/steering, P/brakes, padded dash [there SHOULD be a "C.P." hand written on that Broadcast Sheet!] padded visors,Speed Warning
Device (on speedometer)

Convenience: Foam rear seat [foam-front was standard on Custom Royals] , variable speed wipers, Jiffy Jet, and handbrake/map/glove box/
trunk lights and a vanity mirror.

But, no D500 option on it!

Good night...

Thanx guys!!

Thanks for all the work to decode. I really appreciate it!

I'm not sure if the people I bought the car from were the original owner's or not but do know after speaking to their son that the car was in the family at least 40 yrs. Oddly the car lived in the same town I lived in during the '80s then ended up in my current town a little while after I moved there. So the car followed me around until I bought it... so, I guess it was meant to be.

I will keep everyone posted....

From a '59 Dodge owner to another, welcome aboard James .

Nice car, nice colors too, keep up with the pics !!!

You'll find the same guy that hand wrote in blue pen on the bottom of your broadcast sheet has also hand written mine and many others here on the forum that own '59 Dodge's and have their broadcast sheet.

That must have been his only job back then ??

Here's a link to my data sheets that I found in my Coronet.

Thanks; As mentioned above, the dashboard assembly supervisor acknowledged the optional remote left side mirror, the day/nite mirror, the
A/C dash (vents/plumbing), and 'circled' the option code 313, for the remote & day/nite mirror, and 343 for the A/C.

What's interesting is that he didn't acknowledge the padded dash's inclusion, on the B-Sheet's Special Instructions, which is included with Accessory
Group 317....so somebody had to have noticed or acknowledged that item, independent of any specific notation of it, on his part.

Usually, the padded dash is noted by :"C.P." [crash pad].

Also, this car has the rear speaker, which includes a fader switch being installed on the dashboard.

That option 327 was also not circled or otherwise noted in the Special Instructions, as it normally is.

This car has a lot of optional items installed on its dash!!

And, the dash is painted in all-black.

The car's brake pedal looks to be in very good condition, so this car was apparently very gently driven, before being finally parked.

You can thank that good old merciless East Texas humidity for the trunk mat's survival.

Be VERY careful when handling the trunk mat...it is Un-obtanium, and was used in the 57-59 Dodges.

All these options on the car, the trunk mat, and the Broadcast Sheet, too!!!

Wow.

Van Helsing- I like your car!! Very cool pics and info in the links you gave me. I love that sort of stuff

OldWood- Thanks! I enjoyed our visit too. You have a cool find too!

Simeon57- Man! U did get lucky!! Two good cars. Hard to find that many in one place, that's for sure. Mine is the only one I've seen around these parts in decades.

Neil- Mine doesn't have the pad on the dash now, but I don't know if it was removed at some point or if maybe it was never installed either by accident or a last minute change. There doesn't seem to be any evidence of it being installed. Was it glued down or would it have clipped on and that is why there is no evidence? Believe it or not... the car was owned by a "little old lady". According to her son, she was very small and fiesty and loved that car so I'm sure she took good care of it. He claimed it was running when parked. After I got it home and removed the wheels I saw the Lt rear brake drum was busted...so, I have to assume that is why it was parked. That gives me a little more hope that engine will be free and run good and trans will shift ok.
I'm attaching a pic of the items installed on the dash under the radio. Maybe you can tell me what they all do.

I don't think I have ever seen a FL car with this spare tire brace installed plumb. Every one seems to be skewed or bent. Was it supposed to be that way from the factory?

I wasn't aware of the 'credit' amount, no.

At least, it wasn't a slow boat, to Chi-town.

Stephen, that spare tire 'mount' was intended to brace itself against the tire's possibly falling/flying/slipping into the trunk interior (YEAH; like I knew
about that....but, the angle of the dangle, over the mass off the ass(embly) indicates that that was the reason for that
configuration).

James, the padded dashes were merely physically held 'down' by that/those pot-metal trim pieces that exist around
the perimeter of the dash.

One of the absolute tenants of Forwardlookdom is the saying "Never-Say-Never"; but, someone on the dashboard assembly
station had to have screwed down those chromed padded dash hold-down pieces.

In all likelihood, the padded dash may have started to warp or shrink, and someone decided to remove it.

By your carefully looking at the dashboard's remaining paint, in relation to the paint that has been protected by
the hold-down pieces, you may get some evidence of how long that the padding has been removed; you might, even,
find some small pieces of the dash-vinyl that remains underneath the hold-down pieces.

That's your rear speaker fader-switch, and floor A/C control; dunno what the other two
things' are for!!!

The small one to the left looks like a clock adjuster, I think Neil is right about the fader and the next one with the bone button looks like a push/pull on/off switch and I think is aftermarket, but maybe, you have a rear window defogger?

Good news!!! ...at least to me!!

I put a battery in the ol' Dodge over the weekend. The motor turned over freely. So, at least it's not seized!!

Other good news of note was this all worked: Headlights(Hi and Lo), Hi Beam indicator, parking lights, tail lights, dash map light and dome light, glovebox light, trunk light, turn signals, windshield wipers, A/C & Heater blower motor. Power seat motor engergized and tried to move the seat but I'm assuming the rails may need a little grease.

Didn't work: Dash lights, right turn signal indicator, I didn't try reverse lights.

Removed Carter 4 barrel. It has the '59 part# on it. 2827 I think...? All parts move freely and is very clean inside. No rust at all on butterflies. Amazing for sitting 20+ years!

Hopefully I can try to start it soon

It probably would have been a good idea to throw some Marvel Mystery Oil down the cylinders. After 20 years, they are likely dry. Also, did you change the oil/filter before cranking ? These suggestions will help keep your piston rings from fracturing when you start the car.

I checked the parts book. Can't seem to find 2827. I'm seeing 2787S as the 4bbl for the 59 Custom Royal.

YES!! ... 2787S is the number. I was trying to give the part number from memory. Sadly my rememberizer is broken.

I put some oil in the cylinders... hopefully it worked. I only bumped it and then turned maybe 1-2 revolutions. I didn't want it to start until I change oil and filter. Hopefully rings are still intact.

I was anxious to see if the motor was free.

Years ago I had a 383 in a car that ran great, nice and strong, for many years. I decided to hot rod it... took it apart to bore and all but 1 or 2 comp rings were in several pieces. How it ran that great for that long with that kind of issue is weird.

Where is the VIN stamped on the 361? Or is it stamped at all?

The key won't go in either because the slot is jammed or more likely, the key is worn out. If you don't have a spare, remove the ignition switch from the dash. Then bring it to a locksmith with the old key and he will make a key that will work perfectly. He'll cut the key by hand, rather than just making a copy which won't do any good.

Ian (iMopar), if I got any of this wrong, please jump in.

Ron

It could be that the first or second pin-tumbler in the lock is jammed - a common occurrence, or maybe a broken key is in the lock. Otherwise - remove it and take it to a locksmith and see what the diagnosis is.

That is one great car that you have found, texas383. Congratulations!!

I am really fond of that '59 Dodge, front-end "scowl"; I am almost certain that you can hear your Dodge growling, if you listen really carefully.

Even the Jiffy Jet bag and the trunk mat are intact! Amazing; most of us are super envious of anyone whose car still has a rarely-seen, original, FL trunk mat.

Is the interior as good as it looks?! Very nice.

Are you going to repaint using the original colours?

Welcome to you and to your very cool "luxo-barge", as Randy has named her.

I've had the key go all the way in a few weeks ago when I tried to turn it over... but it took alot of working the key just right to get it to go in. But now it seems to get stuck before going all the way. Perhaps the last pin won't move anymore...? I bought a NOS switch cylinder/ Pentastar keys that is newer than '59... early/mid '60s maybe...?
I was going to pull the switch and replace but couldn't get the assembly to come out far enough behind dash to take the old cylinder out. When I have time I will work on that some more. I will take old switch to locksmith eventually so it's original in that aspect.

Thanks for the kind compliment Fin Me. The interior is very nice. The only bad part is the cloth headliner in front by the windshield has rotted over time and in the back at the rear window as well. But the rest of the headliner is still in one piece. I think the carpet is original(it still has the plastic bezels where seat rails attach to floor) and in great shape. It still has the drivers kick Panel but the right one is missing. I didn't even realize the trunk floor mat was original until I first saw the DPCD part number on it!

I love the mad look of the front end too!!! I guess the reason he looks mad is he had to spend his entire life painted pink.... I'm sure the other cars made fun of him!!
I do intend to go back with the original Rose Quartz/Coral paint scheme. To me that only adds to the total epitome of the '50s that the car is all about... FINS, CHROME AND COLOR!!! I'm envious of all you all's cars that you can drive!! All I can do is look at mine.... sit in it and pretend.

James, the Swedes have a specific word for sitting inside your car while pretending to drive it (during their
short mild winter days).

"Farfrumdriving" or something.

Update-

Tried to get it to start with no success yet. It spends over but won't crank. But I didn't spend much time trying to start it. Still need to troubleshoot. I feel confident it will start.

However... with the rainy and wet East TX winter coming I decided since I don't have a good cover or shed for it and it sits out in the open I would try to seal the paint in hopes of slowing or preventing further surface rust.
SO.... I got a few cans of Krylon and put on a "winter coat". That will do until I can get around to getting it running and driving and then do real paint and body.

Thanx imopar380! I didn't bother to strip or sand anything. Just painted over everything for now. However, I only spent $30-40 on some cans of Krylon paint. $3.67 per can at my local Walmart. Ballet Slipper pink seems to be an exact match as the Rose Quartz. Watermelon is a bit more hot pink than the original Coral. But Krylon Coral was too orange. I'm not sure why Krylon called it watermelon because it's not very red like real watermelon or the typical watermelon paint color. I really like the new color combo!!

Oldwood- Now that it has a "show quality" paint job the value just tripled.... maybe even quadrupled!! LOL : )

Now... I wonder if I paint the engine if it will start...........?

It deserves some sort of shelter over winter

The front and rear of the roof liningwould have rotted because of leaky windows (most likely)

A few months of wet weather can do some nasty damage

A Pro-Tip: Possibly the worst thing you can do to a car is park it on dirt if you live in a rainy, damp climate. You will have scaly rust on your frame and undercarriage within a year. Your rockers stand an excellent chance of picking up rust as well. If they're already weak, they may rust through.

If you want to keep this car from rusting, it must be stored out of harm's way, like in a garage, carport with a floor, etc.

Ron

I will happily accept funding for "Save the Pink '59" to build and/or buy concrete and surrounding walls and roof for the Jewel. : )

PM me to make arrangements for payment!

Seriously- I hate that it sits out.... not much I can do about it at the moment though.... other than paint it and hope it helps.
