According to Ed's website:
- BDY 165 = Fireflite sedan
- PNT KGK = Sunlit Yellow / Charcoal Gray Metallic / Sunlit Yellow
- TRM 533 = Gray cloth/vinyl
- AG 1 = Accessory Group 1 = heater + white sidewall tires + radio (less searchfinder) + instrument panel cushion + dual exhaust + clock + windshield washer + rear seat speaker + hand brake signal + outside rear view + mirror + prismatic mirror + vanity mirror
- CS 2 = Color Sweep 2 = the car came with the stainless molding plus a different color lower body section, the "sweep".

So the car was basically yellow with a grey sweep

That would have been very striking

Dont look like it left the body builders that colour though

This really looks like a great (big) project, it will be fantastic once its done

I have always been a fan of the ambulances and funeral cars of the 50s

To be honest Brad, you should (in my opinion) finish your Chrysler first, so you dont end up with 2 cars in bits

I am in this situation, but I needed to do the dodge so I could work out how to do the plymouth (I got that one in pieces and had never done a mopar before)

Hi Mick,

Yeah, I should finish one first...

The car came out of the builders white...but there has been a lot of "hand painting" done over the years, so I can't tell if the paint was two toned on the roof and sweep, or not...

OK...here's a(nother) 57 DeSoto with multiple colors, and, yet, no coding under "ST".

ST: "Special Trim"?

Special-Trim makes sense, located between the BDY and the PNT codes on the Paint/Trim data plate.

Yeah; I see the TRM code...Spring Trim????

I am a little confused on that wagon. From the many articles I have read, Desoto had a relationship with the Memphis Coach Company to build their creations (extended limos, flower cars, hearse etc). I obviously can't say it applied to all but there were certain options that went with a special pn the line that was ordered for whatever special modifications they had in mind for it. A good example is my 57 Fireflite 4 door sedan. It was ordered as a stretch funeral car. Desoto added a 45amp generator, HD torsion bars, HD transmission, HD battery and no headliner. It had a special code in the special block. It also went directly to the MCC before being delivered stretched and trimmed out in AAA (single straight stainless down the side). Also was all vinyl interior and single exhaust. Ambulances were also listed as part of the MCC's vehicle's but I don't see the ST 1 code or a SPCL code so it almost seems like they took the production vehicle and modified it from what it was. I am surprised as it was the same year as mine and obviously was shipped to the same company for modification.

Wow, Bob!

Did you ever buy a copy of your car's IBM Build card?

have you ever researched to find out if there are any historians out there, for the Memphis Coach Company?

Neil,
Yes to both. If you PM me your email I will send you the card and some of the articles I have found. In the meantime if you google "history of the Memphis Coach Company", the 6th posting down is by Coachbuilt and is quite informative on the relationship that existed between Desoto, other car builders and the Memphis Coach Company. I have several from the author of that particular piece.

I have received some information on my DeSoto, regarding a possible conversion company, from a fellow on the Professional Car Society web site. He says it was possibly done by Weller Brothers in Memphis, Tennessee. Apparently there was a DeSoto dealer there, that tried to sell the local conversion companies on using DeSoto's. I was told that mine is one of three that Weller did...

Got the chassis photo; thanks, Bob?

Can you PM me a view of your car's IBM build card, too?

Thanks!

Checked with the fellow who wrote a book on Weller Bros. vehicles and he's skeptical it's one of theirs.

Ok, thanks for the info. Would he have any idea who may have built it? I've also had the name "Universal" tossed around...

I am interested in finding out where my DeSoto was ordered from, and shipped to/sold. But the Chrysler Historical website says that no code sheets are available for 1957, only the build card. Will the build card tell me any info about who ordered it?

The build record would have the dealer code and CHS should have that. If the car was ordered in the U.S. the codes would be the same as Plymouth as DeSotos were sold at Plymouth-DeSoto dealers.

There is a good possibility that the car was purchased from a dealer and the conversion was done sometime after that, given the lack of HD equipment.

Ok, I have printed off the request form, and I am mailing it. Maybe this will go a little further into solving which company converted it, if I can find out where it was originally sold.

Bill:

Do you think this car would have been purchased from a dealer? Or would it have been drop-shipped to the body builder and then delivered to the selling dealer?
