Just ordered my $95 a yard material for my '59 sport fury ($400 just for the cloth) and a set of door panels for the same car ($900)...ouch., "AFTER" i paid for the parts I asked how long it would be for my door panels and I was suprised to hear "next year some time"...?..WTF...are they "that" busy?.., I guess I need to invest in SMS stock...man oh man. I guess when you have the market cornered you can charge what you want. Very friendly on the phone taking my order I must say,. but I think 4+ months is kinda a long time.

You will be very lucky if you get it in four months. Next year means anywhere from 4 months to 16 months, and people here have waited that long and more for panels. If you don't see it in January or February keep hounding them.

If possible, you might want to consider ordering the door panel material and then have a local upholsterer do the actual restoration. As mentioned, 'next year' could mean 16 months........ or more............

How many "yards" of seat material did SMS sell to you?

A yard should be a 6'-wide by 3'-long piece.

With the Fury's 'bucket' seats, how could you require more than 2 yards of the cloth (because of the extensive 'wastage'
involved---Ok; 3 yards max)?

Like Arland says, above, meet with an upholstery shop and confirm (with your car's existing door-material, and vinyl) how much material
that you'll need to buy from SMS.....and have your shop custom-stitch it all together.

I ordered mine for the 60 Desoto and she told me they had everything in stock except the door panels. They'd be a 6 month wait. I've read enough threads about the door panel delay that it won't be a problem for me. These cars have a plastic sculpted panel that is glued to the vinyl on the door panels. My vinyl is in fair/good condition but all the plastic is broken and deteriorated.

To do my 2 dr hardtop with bench seat I ordered 3 yards of fabric, 3 yards of green and 2 yards of white. Also 3.5 yards of headliner material and green windlace. I've received all the vinyl and fabric in 3 weeks time! The windlace is still absent and of course the door panels. The fabric was shipped, folded over and in a box that UPS tried to destroy. It's now on a proper roll so it won't be wrinkled when sewing time comes.

Even if you get the material in the next year or so, it may be the wrong color. In my case it was red instead of blue, close enough for them back then I guess. I hope that they have improved. I have heard some positive outcomes over the last few years.

You might remind them of that fact; and find out what the delay is...sheet vinyl should be abundant, in stock.

Are they providing you with the seat beading, too?

No piping and foundation foam, being done by the upholsterer, using extra vinyl ordered to use for the piping.

I have been waiting since Feb, 2013 for my door panels and seat covers. They will take and use your money as soon as you place an order. They have over $4,500.00 of my money and I've only received the carpet set and some bulk vinyl. The carpet pieces for the rear of my wagon were incorrect 4 times, Now they fit but have the wrong color edging. What a pain company. The owner, "Doug" says his staff is "lame". I think its more management. Unfortunately if you want original fabric and heat stamped vinyl, they are the only game in the world.
Good luck!

Since he's charging so much maybe " Doug " should employ less " Lame " staff and start attending to the long list of waiting customers.

SMS was quick to reply to my emails or phone calls when I got around to ordering. I ordered in Jan. They said that my order was placed and just before I hung up, I asked when I could expect delivery. They said they were a "little back ordered". I emediately thought "oh well, what's a couple months" and was really surprised when they said "they would be done around August". Fortunately, I am not in any great hurry. My current panels look OK, just wanted to have them look better. I called them early this month and they said it would be a little longer, for what that is apparently worth?
I'm sure you already tried Original Auto Interiors. They list that they have NOS seat covers for 1959 Fury, Belvedere, Savoy, and Sport Fury. I was very lucky that they have complete[3 seat] NOS covers for 1960 Plymouth Suburbans and in the correct colors. IF anyone is just starting to look around for seat covers and are curious what the "NOS" covers that Original Auto Interios has and are like. Mine are NOS with Plymouth #s on the inside backs. The ones I got are as pliable as new and look great. They have the Plymouth logo molded into the smooth vinyl area on the upper seat back cover. I don't even know if that can be duplicated? I bought 2 sets minus the 3rd seat. I believe I paid around $700+-. I have had them in my car for over 3 years with no sign of any issues and I use my car every sunny day. I'm not sure if the front seats for Suburbans are different than a 4 Dr sedan but when I talked to them, apparently they had a good selection of complete sets of covers for a 1960 Suburban.

A quick question for those who have worked with SMS before. If you order material from them, and not have them make door panels, or seat covers are they faster? I'm curious because if they can ship the material out quickly, would it be easier to order it and then have a local upholsterer do the work?

The seats in my car have been re-done, and they don't look too bad, except the fabric used on the seat areas is not correct. I'm in zero rush to do this as I have other areas of the car to attend to first. This is just information for me to "file" for later.

sconut1,

This has been discussed here many times but here are the three scenarios you can run into:

1) They have all the material and vinyl you want in stock and they will ship it out fairly quickly.

2) They don't have all the product you want and will have to manufacture the material and/or vinyl to fill your order and that will take some time.

3) If you have them make the door panels for you it can take an exceptional amount of time whether they have all the material in stock or not.

My approach is to get the necessary material, vinyl, and carpet in hand so a local upholsterer can make the door panels on a local basis. If custom stamped material is required to make your door panels, it may also take quite a bit of time before it is sent to you.

Just my .02.......................

I had only one experience with SMS when i ordered the material to do my seats. In my case, they were super fast and i really have no complaint: two days I got an email reply with a scan of the sample; i placed the order and not even two weeks later, the yards of material were at my place, exactly as described, perfect match to the oem stuff.

Gord, I agree with David and others. Whenever I ordered yard goods and even the heat embossed ribbed door panel vinyl for the Regal, SMS delivered promptly. But, I didn't need the Regal only cloth. Aivar kindly gave me lots of cloth to do my car.

On the other hand, I ordered EVERYTHING for the 57 convert from GG who said he would work with SMS to get the job done. It took 3 YEARS!!

Bottom line: I guess it's a crap shoot!

I'm thinking about ordering the seat cloth and vinyl for my '61 Newport from SMS. My resto has a long way to go, so it seems if I order now, I will have it when the time comes where I'm ready.

Here's my question. How many yards of material should I order? Obviously, I'd rather have too much than too little, but it's kind of pricey, so I don't want to buy a lot more than I will need.

Ok. Thanks for the input for my question... and didn't mean to hijack the thread.... sounds like it's best to order fabric and then take it somewhere local to get the work done.

I ordered the following from SMS...all for my '59 Plymouth Sport Fury. Door Panel set, Cloth and Vinyl for my seats and door panels and rear package tray... Was around $1400. I then found out how long a wait for my door panels and cancelled my order for them. I got my Cloth and Vinyl in a few weeks., so not bad...but I am still waiting for my refund on the door panels which I have been emailing them for the past month about it...and I keep getting, "refunds are at the end of the week"...OK., that's fine, but too many "end of the weeks" have passed...so I emailed them yesterday again...and I got..."I am not sure why you have not got your refund, I will look into it!"...Well....I don't want to wait till the end of the week.., just refund my $$!

I am sure they sold me way too much fabric also., I will find out exactly how much extra I have after I get an idea from my upholstery guy. Which by the way is making my door panels., said they will be easy to do. He makes the backing panels out of abs sturdy plastic so they don't "warp" in the coming years.

By the way, my shipping for my vinyl and cloth was $80+ and I am only one state away!

Anyone tried Just Dashes for door panels? They list them.

http://justdashes.com/DoorPanels.htm

My 58 Belvedere panels from SMS are works of art but they took nearly a year. Probably try JD for my 57 Pontiac.

My door panels were supposed to be done in August. I emailed and they said Sept. I emailed them again and said that I had heard they are unreliable on delviery times and that I was concerned. They emailed back they said I would be moved up on their production schedule. Gee, I'll bet I get them a lot sooner now.
I know they said August but I don't remember if they said what year.
