Veteran Posts: 129 Location: Ben Lomond CA in the Santa Cruz Mtns | 1 day before taking off on vacation, the garage support rafter gives way and creates havoc! Does anyone know the type/part number and where to buy the windshield for a '58 Desoto 4 door sedan? Somewhere I read to order clear as opposed to tinted. Thanks Bruce (rsz_dscn6892.jpg) (rsz_dscn6898.jpg) Attachments ---------------- rsz_dscn6892.jpg (77KB - 166 downloads) rsz_dscn6898.jpg (92KB - 161 downloads)

Location: Under the X in Texas | Your Nat'l Assoc. of Glass Suppliers (NAGS) catalog page is attached. These numbers never change for are superseded. If your car has tinted glass all around, you will want a tinted windshield. If you have clear glass all around you still might want a tinted windshield. Some early tinted glass was consistent tint from top to bottom unless you requested shaded-tinted glass where it was darker at the top. Today, to the best of my knowledge either clear of shaded-tinted windshields are all that is available. Veteran Posts: 129 Location: Ben Lomond CA in the Santa Cruz Mtns | Well, I didn't have too much time to be pissed as we were leaving the next day. I was more shocked than anything. My '55 Ford wagon sits next to the Desoto and the beam fell across the back corner of the roof and dented that. All in all we were pretty lucky no one was under it when it fell. Insurance should take care of the damage. (rsz_dscn6897.jpg) Attachments ---------------- rsz_dscn6897.jpg (63KB - 146 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | Is the garage old (it dont look it?) I wonder how a roof support can fall, just thinking, if one went, are the others likely to go as well? Thats going to be hard to fix on that wagon, its right on the corner of the roof (from the looks of it), I think the term is a bull nose corner I know Best send them to me and I will put them under a tin roof

Veteran Posts: 129 Location: Ben Lomond CA in the Santa Cruz Mtns | My guess is that the beam may have been weak and split at a knothole. The car is in the shop now and nearly finished except for the windshield. The only ones the shop could locate are tinted. Is there a source for clear other than a used one?

Expert Posts: 4034 Location: Connecticut | It was not uncommon for folks to order a tinted windshield (to reduce glare), but clear side and rear glass. Ron

Veteran Posts: 129 Location: Ben Lomond CA in the Santa Cruz Mtns | Thanks for all of your help guys. Tinted it is then. The car will be ready this Thursday. Over 10K worth of body work which also included straightening and a re-chrome of the front bumper, removal and polishing of almost all of the stainless, realignment of the hood and a re-spray of the entire car! Veteran Posts: 129 Location: Ben Lomond CA in the Santa Cruz Mtns | Well, the damage to the paint was so bad it can only look better than it did. The windshield is being replaced now and the car will be ready in a few days.

Veteran Posts: 234 Location: Dallas,Ga. | Still an awesome car! Love the colors on it. I remember when it was on Ebay a few years back. The Wide Whitewall tires make the car! Edited by zachs58 2014-09-26 4:16 PM

Man, Rosie looks better than ever! I now love the tinted windshield too. Thanks again guys for all of your help. You know, if you are on the Central Coast or in the Northern California area, Leland's Automotive Refinishing is your go to shop for old school auto body work. We are so pleased with Lelands's work.
