I've been looking for a '59 Dodge for quite a while now. A few weeks ago I got a call from a guy who went to look at 2 motorcycles, and spotted this '59 in the same building where it sat for the last 16 years. He made a deal with the owner to purchase everything, got the car running and driving, and after contacting me, delivered it today.

Nice find!
You found one of the few holy grails in the FWLK-scene...

I still think you should've mentioned in the title it was a convertible.

Thanks. The bottoms of the seats are shot and have blankets on them. The car has ps and pb, (mirrormatic ?)mirror, dual antennas, and new dual exhaust. I've been running wanted ads for quite a while now. Persistence pays off. It took me 20 years to find a reasonably priced original '68 Hemi Dart through these wanted ads. Auto Round-Up and Classic Cars & Parts run free photo ads.

What you've got there is an all-Ruby, with white top, Coronet vert, with the black & red interior---just as it appears, now, which was built at
the Detroit (Hamtramck) "Dodge Main" assembly plant o.o.a. 3/20/59.

In addition to its having TorqueFlite trannie, its got the Deluxe Radio-Heater accessory group: heater/defroster, back-up lights, REMOTE-control
LT o.s. mirror, Mirror-matic (those two are the 'deluxe' items), and the push-button radio.

In addition, it's coded for having the quarter panel 'Chevrons', and the Deluxe Appearance group: 2-tone steering wheel, SPINNERS, stone shields
and clock.

Then, there's the end-of-fin chrome 'inserts' and undercoating.

Be sure to check up/behind the glove box for its Broadcast Sheet, where its other options will be confirmed.

That is one nicely built Coronet!

It's got the standard 326/2-bbl engine, so it will be a sweet driver with good economy.

Great Find. It would be neat to see you drive it in the NOW condition except for the usuals. I can see Lawrence Welk driving with the top down. You did good. I been driving my '59 4dr HT a couple times lately.

The spinner hubcaps, chevrons, and most of the other stainless is in the trunk. I was very surprised to see complete sun visors on it, and what a great design touch with the "silver" strip in the middle of the visors.

There were actually two reds available for 59 Dodge, both with paint code 'R'. The ruby color, as Neil says, and Poppy, which was a bright red color held over from '58.

Interesting to see the flashier sun visors and notch seat back in what appears to be a mostly original Coronet. My 59 convert had a straight driver's seat back and cardboard sun visors.

Well, that makes 3 solid red ones now.
My 59 Vert was originally a white Coronet with a blue top.

The seller converted it to a Custom Royal, except for the interior and the eyebrows.
I redid the interior from the black vinyl it had, when I bought it to the Custom Royal interior
except SMS got the door panel wrong.

The seller had 2 eyebrows for the Custom Royal but one was broken, (smack dab in the middle).
Aivar was able to get me one off Ebay for 75 bucks.

My car gets driven a lot, and I have a blast with it!!!

Congradulations on "YOUR FIND"!!!!

Gary

I grew up in OH, and there wasn't any 'county' identifiers that I am/was aware of, back then.

You can contact the OMVD, in Columbus and ask them what they know about this plate/VIN; they AIN'T "vanity" plates.

Ohio plates changed colors, every year---a fun thing to wait for, as a kid.

Didn't have the time to look 'into' your car's interior scheme, yesterday, but you have (another-) "Car of Mystery" !

As Ron says, above, the Coronet convertibles were supposedly NOT available with the "Custom Coronet" interior (altho there is/was no
physical reasons WHY it couldn't be installed in a vert).

Here's a couple BxW shots from the 11/87 WPC News magazine, which discussed the 1959 Dodges.

As you can see/read, the Custom Coronet interior scheme was not "supposed' to be installed in a vert (even tho the ad agency included a vert in its listing-presentation of the Coronet models).

Your car has, not only the C.-C. padded-and-notched-back seats and cloth/vinyl coverings, and carpets, but also the C.-C.
door/rear trim panels.

Also seen is a detail of the Custom Coronet option codes, and the red/black C.-C. motif carries the code "149".

Your car has the standard, non-Custom Coronet (red/black) interior code: "139".

So, where did your car's interior come 'from' ???

Normally, a non-standard interior would have "888" or "999" under its TRM on the P/T plate (and, if the interior were missing, it might be
very difficult to confirm whatever-kind of OEM interior that it had had, from the non-specific 888/999 codes.

So, there appear to be five possibilities, here:

1) PURE factory screw-up or,

2) (....UN-likely:) the factory happened to be out of (some aspect-item[s] of) the red/black standard-Coro interiors, and, so, the Line Supervisor said: "Scrooit, put the Custom Coronet interior in it; keep this line MOVING...!"

3) Some sort of Special Ordering---MAYBE the car was built for/at the benefit of a Company worker or Honcho, and a 'notice' accompanied the car down the line, that a Custom Coronet interior was to be installed in this-particular car.....

4) Owner/Dealer request; UN-likely, too, because an official 'order' should have been stamped 888/999 onto the P/T plate and on the Broadcast Sheets and on the IBM card.

5) Post-build retrofitting...also un-likely, given the 'low' status of the Coronet and the 'waste of money' involved in COMPLETELY and entirely changing-out a perfectly good interior for another one....most likely scenario is that the DEALER did it (but, before-or-after it was sold????).

A car of MYSTERY....

Option 6 Neil

Being a convertible, It was probably owned by someone with a moderate amount of wealth when new and maybe there was a storm or vandals got to it and insurance paid for a new interior.

Soooooo, as it must have the wrong insides, the car must be totally worthless, sooooo, best send that worthless junk over here to me, so its out of the eyes of those that know its not as per normal build.

Would it help if I offered to pay shipping????????

My factory photos of the 59 Coronet convertible show notch-backed seats and snowflake pattern.  So maybe they decided to upgrade all converts, since the regular material was flimsy while the snowflake covers had additional reinforcement, so they were less likely to rip.

Very possible, Ron.

The literature, above shows the Custom Coronet interior, but expressly states that it was NA on the verts.

Any theories about how/why Dave's car's TRM is coded for having the standard interior, and not for the C.-C. interior scheme?

Just checked Gary's Coronet vert's IBM card, and its TRM code is 135 (standard-blue); it was built on 4/21...that's fairly late in the
model-year production.

The documentation was likely produced in summer '58, before production even started. My car also has the same TRM code as Gary's, but with straight seat back (Dec '58 production). Not sure of the original material, but may have been the standard, non-snowflake pattern. We're not sure what Gary's car originally came with since it's been changed slightly.

Yea, Just slightly", Ron, Just "Slightly"!

The seller (whom I bought the car from) said He had about 26 59 Dodges in his lifetime.
As I recall He also worked for Dodge at one time.

Unfortunately He is deceased now, so It's hard for me to get hold of him, alto I have
been able to get hold of his Son, who helped him rebuild the 59, as I was curious about
the factory AC and the factory AC vents in the car~~~~~they took that from a Doner Car.
