Veteran Posts: 279 Location: Klein, TX | Any thoughts on replacing the original oil filter can on a 325 poly engine in a '57 Desoto Firesweep would be appreciated. I presume the existing oil filter assembly unbolts from the block and a after market adapter is attached to the block. I am hoping someone has already used one of these adapters on a Firesweep and can provide some sage advice. Thanks in advance.

Their catalogue will give you options on a replacement fitting for screw on-modern filters. I have a Mopar V6 (3600) filter on their vertical adapter on my 271 Hemi, I have to use the smaller filter as the bigger Ferd filter interfered against the bell housing., But the 3600 filter is accessible from underneath and removing it won't spill oil down the side of the engine.

The motor has a check valve underneath the rear main cap that will allow oil to bypass the filter if there is any back pressure. The new filter design doesn't flow as easily as the older filters and so you will end up with most of your oil bypassing the filter. If you want to swap to a new style filter, it is best to block off that bypass valve too.

While operating the ball moves up into the passage blocking it except for a small amount of oil that can work around the ball, certainly not enough to oil an engine if the filter was clogged.I don't recommend switching to a modern oil filter without pulling the pan.
