This is SO cool. Way to go ! I was searching around for that thread last week, wondering
whatever became of this car ...

So, what was the status of the rear cargo/no-seat area ?

Looking forward to seeing this hideous thing come back to life.

Is the "no back seat" area finished at all, in any manner, or, does it appear that a rear seat was just
removed from the car/

Gotta believe that the factory did SOMETHING to 'finish' the appearance of a 'missing' back seat.

Neat car! Glad to see it getting built up here on the FL site.

Any pictures yet of that backseat area and cover? I think everyone is anxious to see that.

I'm sure you saw the Photoshop I did of a "hot" version of a business coupe in the other thread. If you want it, I can send the original Photoshop file with the various layers that you can play around with.

Very nice to see it here. Keep us posted!

==============================================================

I think we all are. A stripped out back seat area looks like any other car. It was how they
constructed the seat replacement that made a business coupe special.

So, are we to assume that this car, like all the rest, had the business coupe special rear seat
area "equipment" tossed ?

Here, I was getting all excited to finally see what that stuff looked like.

It seems like a scan of a '57-59 Plymouth parts book would show how this area was finished out in a business coupe, along with part numbers. No?

In spite of my 58 Plaza ownership, I have yet to buy the associated books and lit. I may
already have some of it from earlier 58 Plymouth ownership or dealer stock ? But that stuff
is all boxed up and put away, so I have not looked.

A long time ago I thought owning/restoring one of these would be really neat, but the idea
of a stripper 4 door won out. The thing that makes a business coupe neat is the extreme
stripper nature of it, and that special rear seat area trim out. Without that, it's just another
two-door sedan. The fixed rear glass is not that big of a deal to me. It's ALL the details
together.

Were I to do one of these, it would be done to represent what a unique car it was with all
those quirky stripper details proudly shown off in all their underwhelming anti-glory !

What was the last year a Mopar business coupe was offered, 58 ?

Not exactly comfortable with all these "drag" modifications being done to a business coupe. They are nearly non existent, more so than Furies. Rare cars don't have the luxury to be modified in such a way.

57Kelii, I have to disagree with you. My 58 business coupe came with no engine or trans. and no interior so I will be using interior parts from another parts car I have. Also, I plan on installing a 440 and 4 speed in it. Are you one of those "purists" that demand a car be restored to original condition? Maybe you have a spare 318 and 3 speed manual just laying around you will give me.

I plan on building the car how I have dreamed of having it. So it will have a hemi with 2 four barrels, a four speed on the floor, and I may even put a rear seat in the car.

metalshop16, thanks for the offer but I plan on running a mopar 4 speed in my car. I let myself get a little irritated at 57 Kelii's comment that a business coupe should only be restored to original condition. My car was built with a 318 and manual 3 speed but that was missing when I bought the car. I actually have a 57 3 speed and 301 I could put in it if I wanted to.

Many years ago I stumbled on a guy who had 3-4 59 Chevy sedan deliverys and a business coupe.
Back then, I was all about hardtops, convertibles, and bling, but was aware enough to realize how
special these professional stripper cars were. His business coupe remained in rough, but original
condition and I remember thinking what a clusterschtuppe that back seat area was for any use but
a traveling salesman with the type of commodity that could be hauled that way. And even so, why
not get a 4 door so you could get at the goods ??? Still, it was really cool for being such a stripper
POS and contributed to my developing appreciation for these bottom-of-the-barrel cars.

I would hope anyone with one of these very special cars would appreciate them that way, but
realize that everyone has their own tastes. I know if I saw one at a car show, I'd walk past all the
300's and Furys to drool on the truly RARE car. As far as I know, there is not a single example of
a 57-58 Plymouth business coupe anywhere that is restored as a business coupe.

Just saying that some of these rare cars should be kept stock. I agree with doc. Not all cars have to be pure, but they made 49, 000 Plaza and 55, 000 Savoy post coupes. 2, 800 Business coupes were made, and none are known to survive in original condition. Think about that.

Given the trade-in culture that was very strong through the fin era, few people kept their cars
more than 3-5 years before the car went to the secondary market.

Now you have a stripper mobile with no back seat ! Who would want THAT ? I would bet good
money that most of those 2,800 business coupes got a back seat stuffed in them from a wrecking
yard car at this point just to market them. From that point forward, it was just another two-door
sedan (with the package shelf equipment removed). So, the chances of an original surviving had
strong odds against it from early on. Strippers did not survive well for similar reasons (not appealing
to used car buyers), but professional, special use cars enjoyed an acute onset of non-desirability
in the original-use condition.

If memory serves, 58 Plazas like mine were built to a number of some 54,000 and change. Hard
to believe, considering how few we see today compared to the sexier models, but it tells a definite
story of how that secondary market worked before fin cars gained acceptance in the collector market.

It took a queer kind of personality to love a stripper. That frugal, almost Rainman kind of Great
Depression survivor kind of person who thought "frill" was ostentatious and embarrassing, yet was
not the type of old car beater that drove them into the ground like most people were. They took an
odd pride is BEING a bare bones kind of person that we rarely see in U.S. society anymore, going to
great lengths to make that spartan mobile last forever as a matter of personal pride. The more out
of style it was the better. It made more of a statement about the frugality of the owner. We don't
grow those kind of people here anymore. Everyone wants sexy and debt, the worst nightmare of
the frugalitarian.

Wow! are you going to put in that 392 Hemi? Marc.

I could be wrong, but that looks like a 1956 354 to me. What is the block number?

Nothing would be done to this car that couldn't be undone. This cars engine and transmission are long gone anyways. I'm not building it for the people at the car shows just trying to achieve the car I want to drive myself.
