Location: the Great Northeast		I am tired of this Maine winter. There has been plenty of snow and plenty of plowing... and did I mention the days on end of below freezing cold.

So I am thinking of warm summer days... hot.... so hot that my car is shimmering... hey, is it melting????

Location: Parts Unknown		What is the attraction to living in Maine ? Seems like a quaint, sort of "backwoods" New England
kind of place, with lots of woods and small villages and a beautiful coast line, for those who like
like that sort of thing. What does one do for work, hobbies, etc. that makes Maine the ideal place ?

I have friends there that complain about the long winters, but love it otherwise. We get long, cold
winters here too .... November 01, with snow sometimes well into May ! Summers and falls
are wonderful, and spring can be nice (if winter doesn't overshadow).

Tell us non-Mainers about what makes Maine a great place to call home.

I think it's the attraction of the lobster trees, could be wrong, happened once i think.

Naturally curious, I guess. Maine seems like a beautiful place, but the long winters seem a constant
theme of weariness.

Why do I have so much time on my hands ? Hmmmm ..... good time management ? .... with my
long winter, this is my morning and evening fun ?

Why so defensive ? If asking questions is so intrusive, why are you posting something like this to a
public forum ? I mean it as nothing more than friendly conversation about a place I don't know much
about. And who better to ask that the guy who is addressing the very point I am asking about ?

Location: NY & VT		Pretty much as you said Brent... pretty, rugged, quiet, quaint, charming... but Maine doesn't hold a candle to the West Coast of New England...Vermont!! (ducks and runs....).

My cousin lives in Harrison ME, near Steven King, and has a summer place near the ocean too... pretty nice over there... great lumbah & lobstah!

In Northern New England, you either love winter (Vermont has world-class skiing), live for summer (120 mile long Lake Champlain, the "6th Great Lake", I'd argue the most beautiful lake in the US, with the Adirondacks on one side and Green Mountains on the other and the best freshwater fishing in the country, according to the Bassmasters guys), or you have a good heated garage/workspace for cars, woodworking, or other indoor hobbies, and you just hole-up for 5-6 months... Maine, pretty much the same. Taking winter vacation to someplace warm makes a lot of sense, but in summer you wouldn't want to leave, never used a/c in 10 years. Universally acknowledged as having the most beautiful Fall color in the world, people travel from afar to see it. Great people, and VT and ME have the lowest crime rate in the US.

Winter can be a trial, but been to 46 of the States, and never found a nicer one, all around... we're moving back to VT for good, asap.

If I want to rant about the president or any other political figure, I'll start something in the Nether Region. If I want to talk about house paint, sticky notes, horse turd or the like I again go to the off topic area or perhaps a different site altogether. You have a quick wit and a sharp tongue. Your back woods characterization along with a "if you like that sort of thing" just reminds me of your jabs at others. I'm sorry you think I am defensive. Your responses here make you seem like a pretty unfriendly guy. What up ?

FWIW, "backwoods" is a positive thing in my world. it would be the polar opposite of "ghetto". And
"for those who like such things" acknowledges that the nauseating "mall culture" America is becoming
generally has no use for quiet backwater places, any more than they do for our ugly old cars. But in
the company we keep here, I would expect more people than normal to find "backwoods" to be a good
thing. I have been invited to come to Maine since coming home and it sounds like a great place. I was
just looking for broader opinions from real people and not some tourista bullsh!t you're going to get via
Google.

We have had about 3 weeks of freezing fog, creating that crazy hoar frost on everything above 2500ft.
It is really beautiful and not so #@! cold that a person can't work outside. After the bitter cold of AFG,
it is really wonderful to be home and soaking this up again. I would sure like to have finished my shop
to a point I could heat it, but all-in-all, it could be a lot worse. I hope your spring is warm and comes
early.
