It's probably self inflicted. I drove the car for about 5 miles with the e-brake not fully off. Stopped in busy traffic and noticed a hot smell and smoke coming from the transmission tunnel under the seat (hot paint smell). I moved the carpet away and the top of the tunnel was too hot to keep my hand on. I panicked thinking what could it be until I went to apply the e-brake and realised what it was.. No probelem or so I thought.. Next time I took the car out I got 2 miles up the road and noticed thatthe speedometer wasn't working.. Checked cable and that was ok. checked speedometer with drill and that was ok too th only thing left was to check the pinion drive... Not good.

I think the heat generated from the e-brake traveled up the output shaft and has melted the nylon gear that turns the cable to the speedometer. Either that or I could tell myself that it just wore out (that would take away the blame on me)..

Where would a guy like me in the UK be able to get hold of a replacement?

Cheers

Carl

I don't know Chuck. As I say I was just looking for an explanation of why the drive failed.. The trans fluid seems ok, car itself drives fine so it probably just wore out..

I'll look into those other stockists mentioned too. Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure but I don't think nylon will "melt" will it? I wonder if what happened was that the heat made the parts expand so much they lost the needed clearance, both tooth clearance and shaft clearance, and the extra drag caused them to just chewed themselves a bit. When they cooled down they were no longer "big" enough to mesh anymore.

That was along the lines I was thinking of.
I dropped the thing on the floor now. End has broke off so the is the complete end of that one.
I can't seem to find the parts on the above sites mentioned. I'll try again later..

If you don't have any luck let me know. I have a box full. You can have it for the cost of postage. They cost me nothing...

I have only just seen your reply Glenn.. Wow I wish I saw that before I ordered one from Brads.. It arrived today, I didn't realise it would be just the plastic only part. I was under the impression it would be the complete assembly as I was quoted and payed $42.50 for shipping and handling (thinking because of the weight) to the UK. I thought it was a little steep and when it arrived the shipping on the box payed was $8.88! Where the hell did the other $33 go? Just the plastic pinion gear in a sealed bag then wrapped in a page of a magazine and put in a small USPS box. Total weight 3 oz. $77.50 total for part and shipping and then when it got to the UK another $21 for VAT and international handling!! I'm in the wrong job..

.............How much for a box of 10 Glenn?

Even if it was the complete pinion it would never ever cost anything anywhere near that to mail it anywhere on the planet.
I just mailed 2 of these pinions to Sweden from New Zealand (that's a long way!) and it was just under $25.00.
I have long had enough of price gouging profit taking thieves who quote exorbitant charges for mailing items.
It is easy to check on line these days and that is what I do. Weigh the part on the kitchen scales, add a little for packaging then go straight to usps.com and see what it actually costs to mail something. Even then some numb-nuts can't follow instructions when they are in black and white.
The fact is that this is illegal and you have a valid fraud claim whether you paid using your Visa card or Paypal. Take a photograph of the actual postage paid, and email the company that took your payment. Visa and Paypal both take this seriously and will refund first/ask questions later.
Things are dear enough these days without being ripped off blind.
Glenn.

Thanks Glenn, I will look into that. I have messaged Robyn at Brads as that was who I was dealing with to see why it cost so much. I don't mind paying some money for these hard to find parts but $33 is quite frankly taking the piss. If I don't hear anything soon I will follow your advice Glenn. Thanks

THIEVES thats what they are. i still ship for actual costs and i must be a fool. i'd be willing to bet that i paid the equivalent of a good 1960 matador/polara coupe in the past 20 years for exorbitant handling/shipping "fees". i'm fed up with it.

I got a reply..

"I am glad that you received your item and Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Normally we ship international with insurance using priority for tracking, but the shipper used first class instead. Cost was USPS 8.88 plus handling 10%We will refund the difference.  ($32.73)Thanks Robyn,"

Insurance?? More like paying twice for an item just in case one goes missing..
