Anyone know of any honest repair shops for speedometers? It may be something dumb like needing oil or something but idk. Thanks, Kelii

what is wrong with your speedo? Could it be the cable?

I just had the speedometer rebuilt in my '57 Chrysler. The insides were broken and wrapped around the spindle, and the needle just fell out. Looked pretty bad, but Marcel fixed it and did a great job for $150 at A-1 Electric & Speedometer 1610 W Artesia Blvd, Gardena, CA ?(310) 217-0491 ? · www.a1electric.com

There is also: North Hollywood Speedometer & Clock Co , 6111 Lankershim Blvd, North Hollywood, CA ?(818) 761-5136 ? · www.nhspeedometer.com
These guys look professional, but I have never used them.

I thought at first that the pinion going into the transmission was worn, so I replaced it, but even though pinion is moving correctly now, the speedometer won't read, so it might be a issue with the speedometer itself? I'm not sure.

Unscrew the cable from the back of the speedometer and test the cable by trying to twist it. If it turns with it pushed in it's housing, it is bad. Next, get someone to turn the back side of the speedometer under the dash and watch it from the front to see if it responds.

Hm, I'm not sure if that's possible or not, I'll have to check. It's not like the Chrysler speedometer I have from '56

Just had a nice conversation with Marcel.

Years ago, when I experimented with the 3.55:1 rear gear, I had a "ratio-adapter" (I call it a Gizmo) be made up by some
company in the Mid West.

After the 3.55 experiment went bust (too much operational noise/RPM, and too much loss of MPG, and not much gain in
acceleration), I removed it (and the Gizmo) and am now enjoying greatly a 2.76:1 gear set in Horie.

Anyway, Marcel indicated that if I send him my 3.55 geared-for Gizmo, and tell him how conservative the odometer reading is,
now, with the 2.76 gear, he should be able to change over my Gizmo's gearing to reflect the current 2.76 ratio.

Here's the Gizmo...

Speaking of speedometers, the one in my 58 Chrysler just took a dump.
First it made a buzzing sound, then quit making the sound, but started up again
then the speedo rush to 120 mph and broke off the needle, (No I wasn't stepping on the Hemi at the time).

Aivar said they lubed the speedo cable before they gave me the car,
soooooo--- does it sound like a speedometer problem or could it be the cable?

It is quiet now , and the odomet3er still works, (If that helps).

Also thanks for the info on the speedo repair, fortunately Aivar is gonna give me a spare,
but I want to rebuild the old one, (just in case)!

If the odometer works, then the speedometer is damaged and the cable is ok Gary. Most probably one shaft of the needle carrier broke off and caused metal to metal contact between the needle carrier and the turning wheel. You should be able to repair your speedo with a spare one, or send it to a gauge repair man.

Thanks Sven.
Yes, I know the cable is ok, right now, but I just wanted to BE SURE, that it was NOT the cable
that caused the speedometer to vibrate in the first place. I don't want to mess up the replacement speedometer!

I have been reading up on how to replace the speedo.
It does not sound like a fun job, has anybody replaced or removed a speedometer in a 58 Chrysler?

Hi Gary, for to be really sure that the cable is not frayed or worn, unscrew the cable at the speedometer and carefully pull the cable out of it's housing. You can clean it, check it, grease it in and relatively easy engage it it the transmission again.

probably but a dry or bad cable can wind up like a torsion bar (that would explain the rushing to 120) and destroy the speedo but not the odometer.

I just replaced the one in my '57. It isn't a bad job. Just 3 7/16" nuts on the backside along with the speedo cable, and the 2 lights that pop out. I also have an extra '58 Chrysler speedo if you run into trouble (I stole the lens from it that I needed for my car). I have no idea if it works though. Right now I am working on fitting a tachometer in place of the clock. It isn't as easy as I hoped it would be.

Thanks for the inputs!
I will have Jon, (JMC Performance), replace both the speedo and the cable , just to be on the safe side!

Thanks for the offer on tne speedo, Powerflite, fortunately Aivar is giving me a spare He had.

I replaced the clock with a tach on my 59 Dodge. Take a look at the "Prosport Guages".
It fit right in where the clock was, and you can choose either white or red lighting with the Prosport guages.
