I am starting this post for input on getting some pictures and information on the display cases that the salemen in the day would use to show customers the options for ordering their new car. Back in the fifties and sixties many people actually ordered their new cars with the options and colors they wanted, unlike today where you chose what is on the lot. Here are pictures of my cases and I hope you enjoy seeing them. Please post additional pictures of other boxes out there. I have a friend with a 58 Chrysler box, so know that they were made for Chrysler as well as the Dodge and Plymouth models I have pictured. I also posted a couple Buick boxes I have, as they also showed the customer the options available. Shown are 1957, 1958, and 1960 Dodge cases, 1959 and 1961 Plymouth cases, and 1960 and 1961 Buick cases. They have flourescent backlighting that make the colors pop. There are color inserts that the salesman would insert to show the car in thecolor you might be interested in ordering. Lets see what else is out there.

Wow...ya really DO learn something every day!

I had no idea that this system existed back in the day! Do you know if they did the same kind of thing for DeSotos?

Those are very cool and unique items to collect!

Thanks, Paul for the info and for those great photos!

Here's my contribution, with 1958 & 1957 CHRY/IMP's, as seen at L.A.'s
Fall Fling swap meet in 10/01.

I've got the 57 Dodge acetate-inserts and the upholstery/trim attachments,
but not the actual display box.

IIRC, the 1957 Dodge display box has three separate pull-out shelves, while the
1958 box has that one-long shelf.

I was fortunate to locate and aquire all the contents of the 1961 Plymouth display box. It's in the mail to me now and I'll post some pictures once it arrives. Unfortunantly I don't have the lighted box itself.

If anyone should have one, or run across one I would love to get one.

PM sent Paul.

There was one on Craigs List of 1960 Dodges. He wanted over a Grand for it, thanks but no thanks.

I recently added another interesting dealer box highlighting the 1960 Unibody that was built for Dodge dealerships. The box is lighted and blinks to show Unibody alternating with the exterior of the car.

This Unibody box is absolutely unique. I have never seen one like it before. I have the '57 Dodge unit, all of the pieces of the '60 Dodge display in a "Plymouth" marked box, the '59 Plymouth box and a '57 Chrysler box.

The '57 Dodge & Chrysler units have pull out drawers. The two Plymouth boxes have a fold down front door with the upholstery samples on it.

I have a plastic light box unit for '62 Dodges that has a roll of translucent paper in it with knobs at each end of the top of the box to roll past the lighting.

Years ago I picked up a '49 DeSoto display unit. It's about the size of a refridgerator, with a frosted glass screen. Images of the (then) new DeSoto were projected from a giant wheel with metal framed glass slides to the screen at the top front.

Paul, all of your units are in much nicer shape than mine. Building a new box would require relatively simple carpentry skills. The toughest challenge might be finding the rough textured spatter paint they all seem to have been painted with.

I would expect that each of the carlines got their own boxes. There would be no reason for DeSoto not to have them. Anybody know when these boxes first appeared and were discontinued?

I assume these all specify which color combinations and trim/upholstery options were available? I'm very anxious to acquire such items for 1957 and (especially) 1958 Imperials.

As requested here is a shot of the original 1958 Packard dealership poster. The fins made it a quasi-forward look car to me. I have a restored wagon. Also, I added pictures of dealer posters for 1960 Buick (I have an Invicta Custom Estate Wagon) and 1961 Dodge Polaras. There are two original paintings used for advertising mock ups for the Dodge models shown next to the Polara poster.

The use of models usually in 1/25 scale came about right after WWII, when dealers did not have any new cars in stock, so they had models of each body style, in each color, (not each body style in each color, but a representative of each body style, and at least one of each color combination). They started out mostly as slush molded,, National Products, and Banthrico, and into the 50s, AMT, Product Minieature, and Johan produced a number of them.

Hi
Not too sure about the '58,59 Packardbaker wagon never saw any up here, the regular Studes didn't hang around long as they rusted faster than the '57-'58 FL cars! Anyhow here is my contribution to the dealer trim/colour selector stuff.
I have the '60 Plymouth Light box along with a '58 Chrysler one...both work Ok. The '57 Plymouth "Features" display catalogue is Kinda neat , with a turn of the page the new engineering features are displayed and with the turn of a thumb wheel the suspension actually moves!
The fourth item is a colour/trim selector for '57 , each model is represented as a transparency that can be laid over a selected set of colour panels depending on whether a solid colour is preferred or two tone or the additional sportone.

Grunau: That is a wonderful resource/time capsule. Congrats on ownership. I am envious. (I have a massive collection of memorabilia for my other hobby cars (1993 and 1994 UrS4 Audis) but only some brochures for the 56 Custom Royal D-500).

Anybody know if these light boxes, etc. existed for 1956 Dodges? If so please PM me.

Finally I put all the Power Car Company Plymouths together. The Plymouths were built in 1958, 1959, and 1960 only. The Power Car Company was in Mystic, Connecticut and also built the Thunderbirds and Mustangs that often were used in parades by the Shriners. They also built Mercurys in 1957 and 1958. I included a shot of the one year only 1963 Corvette Stingray built by the Barry Toycraft Company in St. Paul. These kid sized motorized cars were aimed at bringing in the parents for the real thing by dealers.

Here's the '59 Dodge light box and another of the '59 Plymouth, from a collection in Montana.
I like the gold-toned '59 Sport Fury Convertible zoomie behind the Plymouth box.
