Expert Posts: 2996 Location: Sept. 1958 | I posted this in the postcard thread. That is one wicked looking car!

Location: The Mile High City | Very nice! It appears to be a Custom Royal by the gold color of the block letters on the hood. Interesting that it does not have the red grille badge - but there seems to be no rhyme or reason between the red and black badges. Great photo, Paul - thanks for sharing!

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | I wonder what the lucky owners/friends would have said, if we could have gone back in time, to tell them that that car, 50+ years later, in THAT OEM condition, would be worth around $17,500.00 (in 1958-dollars; $175K, today). Today, WE would be interested to know that that car's 2013-dollars price would be around $40K, and that it was probably bought for all-cash, or, maybe some 2-3 year financing. People saved their money for large purchases, back then; they didn't have any of the expensive "technology" that we can not live without, today, and, most families only had one phone, one TV (with rabbit ears) and one car.

Location: Parts Unknown | It really is interesting to get your head around "those times". A car like this would be your pride and joy, but strangely, that joy wore off with exceptional speed in those days, as the name of the game was "new" and the speed at which "new" became old was greatly accelerated in the 50's and 60's. Sadly, this top shelf example of fancy Dodge would likely be seen as old and "icky" in just a few short years - long before it's genuine service life was over - and probably junked without fanfare or notice as "new" was now seen as those shapeless 62-64 cars then coming out. When I was a kid, TV was something the family sat down to watch at night together. A single telephone usually occupied a central location in the house for easy access, and was seen as far more of a utilitarian item than the toy it is now. Most of my friends' families had party lines and had to make sure the line was "clear" before they could place a call. Those were far simpler times. I am not convinced that our advances outweigh our sacrifices in quality of life.

Expert Posts: 1886 | I hope to buy a 59 convertible next year. It's a car I've always wanted. I will say that if I find one and I'm able to purchase, it will be driven, not on a trailer.

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Curious... did Dodge ever build '58 'Windsors with'the color-keyed headlight doors like this one? The actual part is almost identical and they were built on the same line... I like the look of this car with body color ones. I've seen earlier '58 Windsors with silver doors, and later (Spring?) ones were a darker charcoal color, which is what mine was, but I'm not wild about it... if body color wasn't available, I may have to go "custom"! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | The Dartline Windsor's appear to have dark-gray-colored headlight doors, but they weren't color-coordinated, like (some-) of the 58 Dodge Spring Specials had on them. The color coordinated headlight doors were probably expensive to produce, and limited in their application, between only two different S.-S. color schemes.

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | My '58 4 dr HT isn't a Dartline, but it is a SS, or at least has SS trim (optional?), the extra trim above the rain gutter, the rocker panel moldings, and the horizontal tri-bars on both sides of the license plate frame. It has the dark-gray colored headlight doors but it's almost faded to silver from the New Mexico sun. I may paint them body color, I like that look, and could easily be changed back to original. Location: Parts Unknown | Body color seems OK around the headlights for some colors, but reds, pinks, and this orange make me think of sick animals and critters/humans with eye injuries/ailments. Not a good look.

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | And the charcoal reminds me of 2 black eyes!... hmmm maybe silver (argent?) is good here after all... Neil what is the correct silver paint for a Dodge headlight door, and presumably early in the year Windsor?

There were three 1958 Dodge spring colors: frosted turquois, paris rose, and poppy red. The spring special was a trim package and not necessarily limited to the spring colors. However, the picture Paul posted appears to be poppy red. Edited by Lancer Mike 2013-06-19 5:14 PM

Expert Posts: 2996 Location: Sept. 1958 | This is an old thread, but I bought this slide last year. I realize this was their new car, so that is why they photographed it, but I always wonder the whole story of it. Something that I guess is lost forever, but it's fun to think about... So tell us Jim, Glad, and Stan. (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (63KB - 65 downloads)

Speaking of which, just found out that my nephew & wifey are gonna name their 1st born girl "Avery"....! What's the world coming to? Guess that they really wanted to have a boy. I'm gonna call her Gabrielle, or Gabby, not Avery. Anyway, nice score on that transparency. You can make a nice 8x10" enlargement from it.
