Elite Veteran Posts: 888 Location: Peoples Republic of Oregon | Powerflite - 2018-02-14 7:51 AM Why the "A" designation? I always thought that the "A" stood for automatic, as in A727. Now that is a good question....likely with no discernable answer..... We might surmise that 'A' does not indicate 'automatic', just something that 'they' thought was needed. 'A' being at the front of the alphabet and 'T' (as in T-10) stuck in the back may have been just a marketing ploy. MaMopar did sell a handful of 62 RB cars with the T10 but the trans was too weak for the torque monsters and a new design was born. Now I wonder why Borg Warner uses 'T' ?

Regular Posts: 65 | The "T" in borg warner rigs stands for Transmission - then the ammount of speeds. Aka T-5, T-4 , etc . After they were bought up by tremec they kept the old naming convention for the old parts.

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | Mopar also used the T-10 in their 63 models. I have always wondered why you could get only the T-85 3 speed (used as the design basis for the T-10) behind the 62-63 max wedges if you wanted a manual but not the T-10 which was equally as strong. As was previously mentioned not strong enough.

Expert Posts: 2196 Location: Muskego, WI | The transmission in this setup is a late A body A-833 overdrive from a feather duster. That is why it has the shorty tail housing. I have the same setup in my 1960 Plymouth, but the trans came out of an early 1980s pickup. It has a long, cast iron tail housing but the main body is still aluminum. There are a lot of versions of this transmission, check out brewers performance if you would like to learn more. The over drive does have a pretty large gear ratio jump between 1st and 2nd, but that doesn't bother me as I'm not racing. The little hemi and the 318 poly should both have plenty of grunt to handle the drop in RPMs. After all, the old slant six could do the job as well.

Expert Posts: 2196 Location: Muskego, WI | Well, it's a few years late, but here is a .dxf file of the adapter plate I used to adapt the A833 4 speed (overdrive version) to the original bell housing. Download this file and provide it to a metal fabricator with a laser table and they can cut this out for you if you want to try it. Recently swapped one into my '57 wagon. As to the strength of the T-10, my '63 Dodge was originally a 383-4 with the T-10; I swapped in a 426 Max Wedge and ran it quite a while that way with 7" tires (limited traction) but later managed to get an A-833 and installed it.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9650 Location: So. Cal | Thanks for the adapter plate design Jon. I recognize the hole positions that I circled in red as being used by the 4-speed. But my '56 3 speed bolt pattern uses more of a square pattern with one extra bolt on one side. So what transmission, specifically, does this work for? Expert Posts: 2196 Location: Muskego, WI | To clarify, the adapter plate allows you to mount an A833 4 speed in place of what I believe to be a NP420 4 speed.

Expert Posts: 2196 Location: Muskego, WI | I'll have an update soon for this engine to trans combo. If you watched the video, the hemi was pretty smoky. We bought a radiator and new water pump and we're looking to run this engine up to temperature for an extended period so we can see if the rings seat or re-seat. We are also working on a lever to actuate the clutch so we can test out the trans and shift through the gears.

Expert Posts: 2196 Location: Muskego, WI | Here is the little 241 running on a test stand. The oil is old and thin, it was at 45 psi when cold but continued to drop as it warmed up. Good news is that as the engine ran, the vacuum increased and the oil smoke decreased. We're going to change the oil and keep running it while keeping an eye on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gZFju31rnw
