My 57 FireFlite has always been missing its sun visors and I have no idea what they're even supposed to look like.

Were they covered in vinyl? cloth? Same color as the dash?

I've never even seen a picture of them, since most interior shots don't show them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the picture. That almost looks like tinted plexiglass or plastic on the bottom half.

The standard DeSoto sunvisors are a fabric-covered unit. What is shown above are the optional plexiglass
sunvisors. In the light, they are a dark green. Only available on closed cars.

Somebody, on the 'Pay, last year, was selling sunvisors.

If the DeSoto sun visors really were (all-) fabric covered, that would be a very good thing, as all that an auto
upholstery shop would have to do is to sew up that material onto any-other masonite-type, or solid-material-type,
sunvisor that can be obtained.

Some company, like SMS or Original Auto Interiors, can provide the proper headliner material.

The OEM masonite-type sunvisors all had different finish patterns and/or colors on them, and the masonite
typically is in not great physical condition, when you do find them.

Do a search for Chrysler sun visors, under Ebay Motors; there's over 2,000 items, which can be search-refined, but, I'd
suggest looking thru all of them, because some items are not fully described.

E.G.: these visors are inexpensive and will look OK on almost any FWDLK'er which does not already have the correct ones on it.

These guys could also serve as being good 'cores', to have headliner fabric be installed/attached to them, by a good auto
upholstery shop, for a sedan application.

In the upper photo, the welting is badly discolored, and you can see where thumbs(?) have discolored the masonite
finish.

What also typically happens is that the sun, and maybe some rough usage, degrades the stitching of the welting.

If it is merely dirt, that discoloration on the visors may be able to be removed and cleaned-off.

Depending upon the degree of stainage, and your level of personal bravery and resourcefulness, you might (have to-) take
your visor to a local dry-cleaners and see what advise they can provide, about using a particular stain remover on the visor.

The good news about that worn/discolored welting is that your local auto upholstery shop should be able to replace and stitch-
in new welting onto the visor.

Years ago, I happened to send off my visors to a place in NY (name/location not remembered) which advertised that service, and
they did a wonderful job of replacing my car's visors' welting.

My masonite ones fell apart. So I got some vinyl ones from a parts car and (everyone gasp in horror) used spray vinyl dye to recolor them. They look perfect and they cost me about $.50.

I don't have the visors at all. All that's there is the two metal rods that they pivot on. Sounds like the parts-car route might be the way to go.

So where are people getting sun visors made for our cars? I'm trying to find something for my '58 Dodge.

Thanks, Newstalgia Parts claims to have a pattern for the '57 Dodge Royal (Only the Royal and nothing for '58! So you have to look it up under that name) so I am having them build me a set. They sent me out a couple of sample cloth swatches to check out too. It is a real pain to drive a car during the evening without a good set of sun visors so I am really looking forward to them.

I received the sun visors I ordered. Overall, I am happy with how they look. I wanted a light green vinyl. I don't get along with cloth because I need something that is easier to clean. This fabric wasn't listed as an option on their website, but they sent me a sample after I told them what I wanted and I liked it. It has little recessed stars in it.

But I am having trouble inserting the rod into the visor. I removed the large plate that I suppose was for the original cardboard to mount to, but the rod still has this little metal tab on it. I assume that is what originally kept the visor from turning easily. Am I supposed to remove that metal tab from the rod? But if I do, how will the visor keep from turning on the rod? Anyone done this before?

oh they are just generic coverings. I thought he had the real perforation. Looks good though, how much was it?

I picked up a pair of good padded visors.

Sorry I never got back to this. They cost about $160 and they do have perforated fabric that is closer to the original, although my original material wasn't material at all - it was perforated cardboard! I didn't want that crap back on there and I wanted a light green colored vinyl so that's why I chose what I did. I was disappointed to find out that all these sunvisors are made for the later style rods, '62-up; not our bigger diameter versions. I talked with the manufacturer and they vowed to try to make a new version to fit the old rods, but I really doubt they were very sincere. So I see 2 options to use these on our cars. Either weld the newer size rod to your original bracket or adapt a newer bracket to your car. The newer brackets also have a different hole pattern of course, but I was able to get 2 holes to line up and ground out the other one to fit flush to my trim. It isn't perfect of course, but it works well. You could also re-drill the roof to fit the newer style bracket as well, but I didn't want to make any changes like that. I'll try to remember to take a picture of what I did tomorrow.
