The 4th Annual Chrome, Color & Fins Show – Celebrating the Vehicles of the 1940's and 1950's – will be held on Sunday, September 9th, 2012 at the Endicott Estate, 656 East Street, Dedham, Massachusetts. This will be a non-judged event, specifically designed to provide a relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy all that chrome, those fabulous colors and those glorious fins.

I'm hoping some of the few, proud FL owners in the area stop by. I'm bringing my 57 DeSoto. There is no judging at this show, and no registration needed. And they have good lemonade!

Well, the weather cleared and the Endicott Estates grounds were beautiful, although the show was not as full as everyone was hoping. The beginning, middle, and essential ending of the FL lineup were represented, though. Enjoy the photos. Note, in the photo of Jade57's '61, the fella of to the right talking with Jane & Bill introduced himself to us. His Dad worked in Detroit throughout the FL era as a design engineer...had some GREAT FL stories to share. He promises to introduce himself online as he was well aware of the FL site.

Hi, I'm Fred, the "fella to the right talking to Jane and Bill". My Dad worked for Chrysler from 1950 to 1989, starting out in Engineering (he went to the Chrysler Institute after graduating from college in 1950). In the 1950's he worked on interiors, primarily seats, and was on the team that developed the swivel seat. They won some sort of engineering award for that--I'll have to ask my Mom if she knows any more details, as my Dad is no longer with us. Being born in 1957, I've always liked my "birth year" cars, so it was nice to see the 1957 DeSoto at the show. In fact, I felt a connection to all three cars, as the first car I remember my parents having was a 1956 Dodge wagon, which was very similar to the '55, and my grandfather had a 1961 New Yorker. I remember being fascinated as a kid by the Astradome instrument cluster. My Dad died last December, so being able to see cars that he had helped design and talk to people who appreciate them was wonderful. Seeing the lineup of the beginning, middle, and end of the Forward Look was a particular thrill!

I grew up outside Detroit in the 1960's, so my direct memories are more of the Chrysler products of the 60's, although I was always fascinated by the "fin cars". Dad would sometimes bring home some interesting cars from work. One of the most interesting was the Turbine Car, which he brought home for a weekend. I was only 6 or 7 but I remember being amazed by this car that seemingly dropped in from the future (talk about a "forward look"!). I remember it sounded like a giant vacuum cleaner! I have some family pictures of Forward Look and other Chrysler cars, so I'll have to figure out how to post pictures on this forum and post a few.

It was great to meet everybody today and see your wonderful cars!

Fred

Thanks, Fred! I almost said your name was Fred but didn't want the world to see I misnamed you! It would be cool to see if your Mom has any neat certificates or awards or other items of interest that could be virtually shared. We on the site see so many owner sided items of interest focused on FL cars. I think the items representing "the men and women behind the curtain" would be just as fascinating!

We enjoyed your pictures sooooo much! What a perfect day, good weather, awesome FL cars and new friends! Was wondering if you would share our day with the rest of the Forward Lookers under Members Rides on the Forums Listing page.

Ain't gotta be from or in MA to appreciate that gathering! Well done.

And, Fred, there are at least hundreds of people who would LOVE to see anything your dad was a part of while at Chrysler, and he's probably smiling a bit right now at this.

And you got to spend a weekend with the turbine????????? That's so incredibly awesome....thanks for sharing. Very, very, very cool. Thanks for joining us on the forum.

I had a great time breaking the 4th wall and meeting some of my virtual FL friends in real life. Fred's story is amazing. The Chrysler has the "Highlander" interior. Wonder if his dad was part of that. I had three of my friends with me @ 200# each, a Great Pyreneese at 180# an Am Staffordshire at 62#. Add to that my meager 180# and we can safely say that 1,022 lbs will cause some small disturbance to the lawn below a DeSoto on a curb. I feel bad, actually. That place is beautiful and I made a boo boo to the grass. Anyway, we took lots of pics. I'll get them up soon. I think it goes to show that you don't have to be at Carlisle with 150 FL cars to have a fun day.

A funny story about the Highlander interior on the Chrysler. I was talking with my Mom just tonight and she said my Dad did indeed work on that interior. She liked the design so much that she asked him to get her some extra fabric and she had a skirt made out of it. She said it was a little heavy for skirt material, but it was nice and warm in the winter! She was so happy to hear that people still appreciate these cars.
