How many 57 New Yorker 2 dr Hardtops were produced? When I got mine I was told that a little over 1,200 were produced in CA. How many in total? I've searched for production numbers, but cant find much. Thanks in advance.

The Encyclopedia of American Cars, 1940-1970, says they made 8,863 2-door hardtops.

I doubt that the number of L.A. built cars, including Chryslers(?), was recorded.

Didn't know that NY'ers were built in L.A. plant; always learning something, here.

LA built Chryslers would have 57L in the VIN.

Chrysler New Yorkers were built at the LosAngeles plant from 1953 through to 1960.

In 1957 3,206 New Yorkers were built at LA and 30,967 at East Jefferson. No idea how many hardtops were built at each, though.

Chrysler did keep production records as to how many of each body style were built at each assembly plant. These reports were distributed at the end of the model year to departments heads, sales, production people, etc. They were not published for public use and apparently few have survived.

I have never seen any Chrysler body style numbers by assembly plant, but that doesn't mean someone, somewhere, has the details. Just wish they would share.

The guy that formerly owned my car used to work at the LA plant. Said there were 1024 NYer 2 dr hardtops produced there. He was pretty fastidious, so I'm pretty sure he's prolly correct. My car was remarkably rust free so I'm wondering if a different steel supplier may have been used.

He may have been one of the people who were given the annual production reports, or had access to them. 8,863 New Yorker 2-door hardtops were built in total, so if 1,024 were built at LA, 7,839 were built at East Jefferson. The only other plant that built Chryslers in 1957 was the Canadian plant in Windsor, but they did not build New Yorkers. Only C75-2 Saratogas that were sold as Windsors.

Chrysler did not have stamping facilities in LA, with all stamping done at plants in Detroit or the ex-Briggs plant in Youngstown, OH. Contrary to popular belief, it was not the steel that was at fault, it was the engineering. Too many nooks and crannies that collected dirt and water and no way to flush them out. In particular that covered the headlamp treatments on the front fenders, rear window water drainage, leaky trunks, and rocker panels that let everything in, but nothing out.

The unibody cars of 1960 introduced new body dipping processes for rust proofing and using galvanized steel on parts such as the rocker panels. And they were better than the 1957-59 models.

There have been a few 1957-59 Mopar cars turn up with little or no rust. They were usually treated very well, kept clean, and kept out of the snow and salt.

Thanks, Bill... I didnt know that no stamping was done in CA... There goes my theory on rust... as bad as these Chryslers were, nothing compares to 53 -54 Fords as rustbuckets.

Few cars compare with the 53-54 Fords for being boring, so I guess that works out pretty good !

Chaz, have you ever posted pix of your car ? What colors ? Equipment ?

Mine was very basic for an upline NY'er, but it sure was sharp in that yellow and charcoal paint !

Here's a picture I did post it earlier on another thread. Actually I just sold the car on Friday. I'll let the new owner post the details...
By the way... I HAVE a 53 Ford... (wagon) I guess I'm just attracted to orphans!

I always questioned the logic of having assembly plants so far away from the the stamping plants and foundries...it seems like the handling/shipping cost of the parts would be more than the shipping cost of whole cars.

I remember that you could spot some GM cars that were built on the West Coast because they had 3-piece bumpers instead of the usual single-piece stamping.

As I recall, all the LA plant had argent ( silver) colored bumper pans. the rest of these cars had the pans painted body color.

Here are '57 New Yorker two door hardtop numbers: **

Detroit: 7560 (total)
L.A. 1068 (total)
Detroit built for Canada 191
LHD export (presumably Detroit built) 45 There is no specific plant source for these cars.
K.D.U.B. (Knock Down Under Bond) Export (presumably Detroit built) LHD 24 There is no specific plant source for these cars.

The Detroit built for Canada, LHD export and KDUB numbers would all be subtracted from the Detroit total to produce the number of cars Detroit built for sale in the U.S. L.A. is not shown building any cars for Canada or export.

** These numbers were tabulated 8/15/57. It's entirely possible/likely that any cars built after this date will not be recorded anywhere.

This is an old thread but I wonder where you found these numbers and is there data for other 1957 Chryslers as well?
