Hi...I think that you are looking for part number 1889200 (Prestolite p/n MDT6002). RockAuto lists the drive unit only at present and makes reference to p/n 1889200 for the 1962 DeSoto 361. Hank Dozier in the Forwardlook Forums (May 2. 2002), noted that the MDL6014, (Chrysler p/n 1770712 for '58 DeSoto 361 Firedome), could also be used. The Auto Interchange Systems manual for '50-'65 Chrysler proucts lists it as their #68 interchange type also similar to their #65. They note several uses during '59-'61 across all models of cars but with standard transmission. I doubt that is really the case. The 1889200 has the solenoid mounted on the starter.

Up through 1961 Chrysler used direct drive starters but starting in 1962 the Chrysler reduction gear starter was used on all American-built Mopars with the exception of '62-'64 Dodge 880 AND Chrysler cars with a manual transmission. Those cars kept the direct drive starter.

In 2007 Rockauto.com listed the REMY p/n 25208 for the 1962 Chrysler Newport 5.9L 361 cid V8, (standard transmission). It is a two-bolt unit with the solenoid mounted on it. I purchased this unit for my '58 DeSoto Firedome 361 engine, (installed in a '58 Plymouth), and all I had to do was to file a small cutout next to one of the bolt holes. Some bell housings, (earlier ones), have this quirk. Yours probably does not.

My notes listing crosses to currently available units are as follows: PFI (Perfect Fit Industries) p/n S-CH3249 and Dixie p/n S-5019. Two sources that might be good are World Wide Automotive (Telephone: 540-667-9100), and USA Industries, (Telephone: 1-800-875-6582), and http://www.autoelec.com.

Good luck! Jerry
