Expert Posts: 1730 Location: Michigan | If you go back in this long thread a bit Bob describes the modifications he did to the frame and why. I believe it was because he wanted the wider tires and that required moving the springs inboard. There is some pics of the changes in here somewhere.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | bbrasse1 - 2013-09-23 11:12 PM Hi, Why did you move the rear axle bumpers inside of the frame?? Thanks, Bob Brasse Bob, Mark is correct there is brief mention of this mod early in the thread. The springs were moved inboard to make room for the wheels. The bump stop rubber brackets were simply welded on the other side of the chassis. Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | 57plymouth - 2013-09-18 5:46 AM Your intake information is flawed. The smoother the intake port the higher the velocity. The higher the velocity the higher the volumetric efficiency. While this is true for the dynamics of a pure gas, the distribution of fuel vapors in the airstream is improved with some turbulence. What is lost in maximum airflow is more than made up for in a more complete fuel burn. Those ports look fine to me. I'm just now reading of the original 392 letting go. I know you're trying to put a good face to the situation, but that is a nightmare on a finished, beautiful car like that. I hope the next one gives you a lifetime of happy miles. Cheers. Glad to see ya posting again about your really GREAT DeSoto! Hi Rosy always good to hear your comments and queries. The blue tag is called a "Modification Plate". When ever major changes are made to a vehicle in Queenssland or for that matter, Australia, an automotive engineer has to approve the changes. In this case the left to right conversion, the drum to disc brakes and the replacementof the Hemi to a 392 had to get the blue plate of approval. It is all about safety and there are some cowboys out there who have to be protected from themselves!

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | Hi Danny thanks for your post. I couldnt agree more. Head design and modification is always a compromise. The original motor was over carburated with those 2 4BBLs but I wanted a particular look. So air velocity was going to be down. When we "cleaned up" the new heads it was really just to improve flow by takng out some restrictions- the ports are not polished but they now DO look a lot cleaner. The issue with lack of turbulence occurs when the fuel vapour drops out of supension when air velocity drops too low for fluidization. This isn't going to happen in that "ugly" plenum. Big as it is, it is still a rabbit warren in there and now with another 1/2" shaved off the top, turbulence will be improved at a slight cost to flow. But at least now the carbies sit under the bonnnet with some clearance. And talking of carbies we have replaced the 2 monster 650 Hollies with a couple of smaller 580s. We have also trimmed the valve stems wasteing them just above the valve to help air flow. The heads now flow around 500 HP. The engine has been successfully 'dummy aasembled', camshaft fitted and measurements made for the correct height pushrods. The bottom end is now away being balanced. George Laurie was very helpful in sourcing a flywheel, bellhousing and starter so we can dyno the donk once it's fully built. (photos to come when I get back from Germany). Thanks George! BTW we have removed the sump on the 'old' engine to find fine metal fragments in the bottom. By the time we had removed No.6 big-end we found the problem. The journal had the strangest pitting as if it hadnt been linished. White metal was almost non existant and the steel backing had begun to deposit on the crank. Nothing had let go (thank goodness). It was only at the stage of seizing. We'll do a full stripdown and rebuild at some stage as it is still basically a 'fresh' engine. We also have a spare crank if this one is too far gone.

This is one car that I especially like, though it's not a purist restoration it's a really eye catching rebuild that essentially seems like a brand new car. If fate hadn't got me a 59 Dodge at the time I reckon I would have tried for a Desoto of some sort, really classy cars, love 'em !!
